Binance founder Changpeng Zhao recently stirred discussions about the United Arab Emirates’ cryptocurrency landscape after sharing a claim about the nation’s Bitcoin holdings. The tweet, which referenced an article asserting that the UAE holds $40 billion in Bitcoin, quickly drew mixed reactions from industry experts.
The claim Zhao shared on X (formerly Twitter) sparked skepticism, particularly from crypto lawyer Irina Heaver, who questioned the article’s credibility. She suggested the piece might have been AI-generated and criticized its lack of substantiated evidence.
Addressing the doubts, Zhao admitted uncertainty about the figure’s accuracy, stating, “I also wondered how they came up with the exact number; it’s challenging to collect.” While acknowledging the figure surpassed his expectations, he remarked that it could be plausible given the region’s concentration of high-net-worth individuals.

The conversation led Zhao to reflect on the rapid growth of the UAE’s cryptocurrency ecosystem. He highlighted Dubai’s transformation from hosting “only a handful of crypto companies” in 2021 to becoming a hub for thousands of blockchain-focused businesses.

Zhao added, “I certainly did a lot of shilling here. But didn’t know the number was so big or how much of that could be attributed to my efforts.”
This attention underscores Dubai’s significant strides in fostering blockchain innovation. Initiatives like the Dubai Multi Commodities Center’s Crypto Center have created a favorable regulatory environment, attracting numerous global crypto companies to the region.
The debate over the alleged $40 billion Bitcoin holding emerges as the UAE positions itself as a leading cryptocurrency hub. Although the precise value of the nation’s Bitcoin reserves remains unverified, the discussion highlights the UAE’s growing prominence in the crypto space and its appeal to blockchain enterprises worldwide.
