Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis Advocates Bitcoin as an Environmental Savior

Senator Cynthia Lummis, a Wyoming Republican and ardent supporter of Bitcoin, has challenged the widely held belief that cryptocurrencies are harmful to the environment. Lummis recently shared her opinion that Bitcoin mining may genuinely help with environmental cleaning efforts during her presence at the Miami Bitcoin Conference.

Lummis claims that by using vented methane gas from far-off oil and gas wells, Bitcoin mining offers a special advantage. She explained, “One of the advantages of bitcoin mining is that when you drill an oil and gas well, and it is distant from other oil and gas wells, you vent the gas into the atmosphere until you can bring in a pipeline to hook it up. Well, while that’s being vented, you can pull a bitcoin mining operation in a trailer, use the vented methane gas to mine your bitcoin, and you are preventing that gas from being vented into the atmosphere. Bitcoin is cleaning up the environment.”

The allegations made by environmentalists in recent years that Bitcoin and crypto mining require enormous quantities of energy—exceeding the energy usage of entire undeveloped countries like Iceland—are refuted by this viewpoint.

Bitcoin’s Environmental Impact and National Security Concerns

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining have been linked to increasing air, noise, and water pollution in several assessments, including one released by the Environmental Working Group in April 2023. Influential people like Kevin O’Leary and Elon Musk have also expressed worry about the industry’s effects on the environment and the planet’s resources.

The consequences of Bitcoin go beyond the environment and into national security, Senator Lummis stressed in a more thorough way. She expressed concern over the growing national debt and the possible repercussions of going over the debt ceiling. Lummis stated, “I’m actually worried as we go into another debt ceiling debate that we will eventually increase the debt ceiling to the point where our interest payments will exceed how much money we spend on national defense, so it is a national security issue.”

Lummis Criticizes Lack of Crypto Industry Understanding in Congress

In addition to criticizing her colleagues politicians in Washington for their lack of knowledge of the cryptocurrency sector, Lummis did so in her address. She voiced concern about the fact that many lawmakers are unaware of the differences between Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Lummis highlighted the need for greater education on the subject, saying, “Even though you all know that when FTX failed, they held zero bitcoin, there are a lot of people in Washington D.C. that conflate companies with digital assets. They conflate bitcoin with other cryptocurrencies.”

A Major Proponent of Bitcoin

Senator Lummis has repeatedly expressed her support for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies since taking office in January 2021. Notably, she made her own Bitcoin assets public before joining the Congress.

Lummis submitted a cryptocurrency bill in the middle of 2022 with the intention of creating a legal foundation for future legislation. This action demonstrated her dedication to advancing crypto innovation in the US and showed that she understood the role it played in the nation’s economic system.
