Three years after first announcing plans for a public listing through a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) arrangement with Concord Acquisition Corp., stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Financial is now considering going public in 2024.
Circle Internet Financial is reportedly in talks with advisors on its possible initial public offering (IPO) at this time, according to sources from Bloomberg. A representative for Circle said that the firm has long had the objective of becoming a publicly traded corporation in the United States and that no decision has been made yet.

When Circle first started up, it planned to go public in July 2021. But in 2022, the firm behind the USDC stablecoin revealed an updated agreement with Concord Acquisition Corp. that valued the business at $9 billion. Unfortunately, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) unwillingness to accept the application caused significant delays in this highly publicized SPAC purchase.
Coinbase’s Minority Stake and Dissolution of Centre Consortium
A major step occurred when U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase acquired a minority position in Circle in August 2023, coinciding with the two businesses’ dissolution of their Center Consortium collaboration. It is important to note that Circle came up with the original idea for the USDC stablecoin. The business then formed the Centre Consortium to manage the stablecoin initiative, attracting funding from major players in the financial industry like as Marshall Wace, Fidelity, BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and others.
In late September 2023, Circle filed a lawsuit in response to the SEC’s legal action against Binance, a well-known cryptocurrency exchange. In this legal ploy, Circle asked the court to strike stablecoins from the case on the grounds that they don’t fit the definition of an investment contract or securities. The appeal highlighted that these tokens are devoid of the essential characteristics of traditional investment contracts.

Despite the difficulties and legal constraints that Circle Internet Financial faced on the way to its initial public offering (IPO), the company’s tenacity in navigating the changing cryptocurrency market indicates that it is still dedicated to its strategic vision and goals.
