In a historic election, libertarian Javier Milei has won the presidential elections in Argentina. Milei, known for his strong libertarian principles, secured a decisive win with 56% of the vote, surpassing his opponent Sergio Massa by a notable margin in the election run-off. This win also positions him as the second ‘Bitcoin President’ in Latin America, following El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele, who made Bitcoin legal tender in the country two years ago on September 7, 2021.
Milei, an ardent supporter of Bitcoin, has been vocal about his views on cryptocurrency, seeing it as a pivotal tool for economic autonomy and a return of monetary control to the private sector. His triumph in the election was mirrored by Bitcoin’s performance in the market, which witnessed a nearly 3% increase, reaching $37,350 on Sunday. This rise in Bitcoin’s value is widely perceived as a direct response to Milei’s strong performance and his clear stance on digital currencies.
Throughout his campaign, Milei criticized the central banking system, describing it as a scam. He advocates for significant economic reforms, including the abolition of Argentina’s central bank and a proposal to dollarize the economy. These proposals are in response to Argentina’s dire economic conditions, characterized by hyperinflation, which hit 142% in October.
In his victory speech, Milei acknowledged the immense challenges ahead, such as rampant inflation, unemployment, and poverty. He called for immediate and substantial measures to address these issues, underscoring that Argentina’s critical situation demands more than tepid solutions.
The response to Milei’s victory was particularly vibrant among young Argentinians, including students who have grown up amidst economic turmoil. His win was celebrated in the streets of Buenos Aires with chants against the political elite and the lighting of fireworks, reflecting Milei’s popularity among the youth.
