Philippines SEC Bans Binance Access

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, has come under fire from the Philippines Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which has declared its intention to restrict access to the site within the nation. This decision, which was detailed in a notification made public on Monday, is a major step toward regulating the cryptocurrency industry.

The SEC underlined the necessity of limiting access to Binance in its written appeal to the national telecoms agency on March 12 since it operates an investing and trading platform without the necessary license. Following an earlier warning from the SEC in November 2023 that indicated regulatory attention was increasing, this action is being taken.

SEC Chairperson Emilio B. Aquino underscored the severity of the situation in a letter addressed to the telecommunications agency, stating, “The SEC has identified the aforementioned platform and concluded that the public’s continued access to these websites/apps poses a threat to the security of the funds of investing Filipinos.” The regulator’s primary concern is protecting investors from potential financial risks associated with unlicensed trading platforms.

In addition, the SEC chastised Binance for evading regulatory monitoring by promoting its services to Filipino investors through social media platforms.
