Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, has spoken out in response to media requests following his recent sentence of 25 years in federal prison. Bankman-Fried, who has been detained in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since August 2023, responded to inquiries about his legal experience by email, according to reports from ABC News on April 1.
“I never thought that what I was doing was illegal,” asserted SBF in his email correspondence with ABC News. Expressing remorse, he lamented the repercussions of his actions, stating, “I’m haunted, every day, by what was lost. I never intended to hurt anyone or take anyone’s money.” However, Bankman-Fried’s responses seemed to deflect responsibility for the collapse of the crypto exchange in November 2022, attributing it to “bad decisions” rather than willful misconduct.
Uncertain Future and Legal Battles Ahead
Bankman-Fried is facing an uncertain future as the threat of incarceration looms large. The former CEO should serve the balance of his sentence in a medium- or low-security prison in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing the case in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. After taking into account time served, a docket record dated March 28 showed that Bankman-Fried will probably serve a term of about 24.25 years.
