PayPal Executes First Business Payment Using PYUSD Stablecoin

PayPal has successfully finished its first commercial transaction with PayPal USD (PYUSD), a proprietary stablecoin. According to a Bloomberg story from October 3, this significant milestone involves a payment made via SAP’s digital currency gateway to Ernst & Young, one of the Big Four accounting firms. The precise amount of the money is still unknown. Notably, Ernst & Young’s audit client is PayPal Holdings.

Demonstrating Corporate Stablecoin Use

This transaction is an illustration of how businesses might use stablecoins to facilitate speedier payment processing. August 2023 saw the launch of PYUSD, PayPal’s stablecoin tied to the US dollar. PYUSD is perfect for everyday transactions because it is stable and backed by short-term US Treasuries and US dollar deposits. DefiLlama reports that PYUSD is presently ranked eighth among the largest stablecoins, with a market valuation of $699 million.

Stablecoins are backed by a reserve asset, such as the US dollar, in contrast to other cryptocurrencies. This makes cryptocurrencies more dependable for daily use by lowering the volatility that they frequently encounter.

PayPal Expands Its Digital Asset Capabilities

Jose Fernandez da Ponte, PayPal’s senior vice president of blockchain, cryptocurrency, and digital currency, emphasized that stablecoins have significant potential in corporate environments. He explained, “The enterprise environment is very well-suited for it… It’s a very rational conversation to have with the CFO.”

In addition to the PYUSD initiative, PayPal has been enhancing its crypto offerings. In September 2023, the company announced that U.S. business users (excluding New York) can now buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrencies directly from their PayPal accounts, further solidifying its commitment to the digital asset space.
