Ledger Confirms Hardware Implant In CryptoBilis Wallet Investigation
(Originally posted on : Crypto News – iGaming.org )
Ledger has confirmed a hardware implant in one affected wallet as it investigates crypto thefts linked to devices sold through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis.
Good To Know
- CryptoBilis has halted Ledger wallet sales during the investigation.
- Specter estimates losses above $86 million. Ledger has not confirmed a total.
- Claims involving Europe and models beyond the Nano X remain unconfirmed.
Ledger Wallet Security Checks Have Limits
A successful authenticity check does not guarantee that nobody has physically altered a hardware wallet. Ledger says its integrity checks “cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications to the hardware—such as spying implants—if the original Secure Element remains intact.”
Reports describing device teardowns suggest an implant behind the screen could intercept displayed information. However, Ledger has not publicly confirmed every detail of the suspected supply chain attack.
For crypto holders, the distinction matters. A hardware wallet protects private keys, while cryptocurrency stays on the blockchain. Anyone who obtains the recovery phrase can restore access without possessing the original device. Keeping a paper backup therefore cannot undo an earlier exposure.
Meanwhile, loss estimates vary. Specter puts reported thefts above $86 million, while YFarmX calculates potentially more than $100 million. Both figures remain external estimates.
Ledger has drawn a narrower boundary around confirmed cases. The company said: “To date, all confirmed cases related to the disclosed draining incident of Oct 9th, 2026, involve devices sold through the Southeast Asia reseller CryptoBilis.”

Users have also reported possible cases in Europe and other Ledger models. Those claims do not yet establish a wider breach. Ledger says it is working with authorities while the investigation continues.
