Circle Addresses and Dismisses Illicit Financial Activity Claims

Dante Disparte, the Chief Strategy Officer of Circle, explicitly addresses accusations made by the Campaign for Accountability in a letter dated November 30. According to the charges, Circle assisted illegal financial operations, including allegedly supporting Hamas and maintaining relationships with Justin Sun.
Michelle Kuppersmith’s Campaign for Accountability derived its allegations on stories and studies suggesting connections between Circle and Justin Sun. Circle, however, vehemently disputes having any active accounts with Sun or any of his affiliated companies, including Huobi Global or the TRON Foundation.
Circle’s statement highlights an important point: Justin Sun and his firms have not been labeled as “specially designated nationals” by the U.S. government. In February 2023, Circle decided to close their accounts in spite of this, demonstrating their dedication to compliance and due diligence.
Context and Broader Concerns
This dispute is taking place in the context of growing worries about the potential use of cryptocurrencies for illicit financial activity. The Biden Administration has been vigorously urged to address these concerns by Senators Warren and Brown, particularly in light of the issue of cryptocurrency-financed terrorism.
Their worries are in line with a Wall Street Journal article that said Hamas was using cryptocurrencies to finance its attacks on Israel. It is noteworthy, though, that Elliptic, the report’s data source, contested this assertion.
