The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of India has given Coinbase, one of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the US, permission to reopen. The exchange is now scheduled to re-enter one of the fastest-growing digital asset marketplaces in the world after suspending operations in early 2023 due to regulatory issues.
Coinbase intends to launch retail trading services in India later this year with this approval. In order to increase its presence in the area, the business also plans to introduce investment solutions designed specifically for Indian clients.
Strengthening India’s Crypto Ecosystem
India’s tech-driven market presents significant growth opportunities for global crypto firms. Coinbase’s Regional Managing Director for Asia-Pacific, John O’Loghlen, highlighted the country’s potential, emphasizing the role of blockchain technology in fostering local innovation.
“India’s developer community and entrepreneurial energy are unmatched. But too often, young Indian entrepreneurs have felt forced to look abroad to build global companies. Crypto can change that. By expanding access to our trusted platform and tools such as Base, we aim to empower a new generation of builders to stay home, innovate locally, and scale globally.”
Coinbase sees India as a hub for technological advancements, particularly in blockchain development. The exchange aims to support local developers and startups by providing access to its platform and tools.

Coinbase’s return to India follows a wave of global exchanges securing regulatory approvals in the country. Other major platforms, including Binance and KuCoin, have also obtained the necessary clearances to operate within the Indian market.
With regulatory clarity improving, India is becoming an attractive destination for crypto exchanges and blockchain companies. As Coinbase resumes operations, it is expected to play a key role in shaping the country’s digital asset landscape.
