Donald Trump Firmly Rejects Central Bank Digital Currencies at New Hampshire Rally

While speaking at a rally in Laconia, New Hampshire, former US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his opposition to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Speaking to the assembly, Trump said, “I will never allow the creation of a Central Bank Digital Currency.” The comment was directed against Vivek Ramaswamy, a candidate who supported cryptocurrencies and who halted his candidacy. Ramaswamy shares Trump’s mistrust of CBDCs.
This isn’t the first time Donald Trump has expressed concern about CBDCs. In previous campaign stops, he emphasized the potential threat to freedom, stating, “Such a currency would give a federal government absolute control over your money. They could take your money, and you wouldn’t even know it was gone.”
Influence of Key Critics and Shift in Focus
Trump’s ongoing resistance to CBDCs is consistent with the opinions of other prominent persons who are against them. Notably, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis—another opponent of the CBDC—has stopped his candidacy and given his endorsement to Trump. “I think it’s obvious that most Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” DeSantis said. There is conjecture that the emphasis on cryptocurrency-related concerns in the Republican contest may lessen in light of notable people like DeSantis and Ramaswamy withdrawing from the primary.
Digital assets have occasionally come up as a side subject in conversations among Republican contenders, even if they haven’t been a dominant theme in the 2024 US presidential contest. The significance of conversations about cryptocurrencies in the upcoming election is expected to decline, though, given the recent dropout rate and the lack of focus placed on them by politicians such as Nikki Haley.
