The US Attorney’s Office released a statement stating that Irina Dilkinska, the former director of legal and compliance for the OneCoin fraud operation, had been sentenced to four years in prison by US District Judge Edgardo Ramos. As one of the most recent leaders of the Bitcoin corporation to be facing jail, Dilkinska is 42 years old.
Following her admission, Dilkinska was forced to pay $111 million in reparations for her participation in the firm’s money laundering operations. Judge Ramos noted Dilkinska’s knowledge of the consequences of the plan and turned down her request to go back home to Bulgaria for childcare duties, despite her passionate appeal.
Judge’s Remarks and Sentencing
Judge Ramos expressed disbelief at Dilkinska’s continued involvement despite her intellect, stating, “I honestly do not understand what prevented her from leaving the scheme before the point when it was brought down.” Dilkinska pleaded guilty to money laundering and wire fraud charges last November, facing a maximum sentence of ten years.
Another co-founder of OneCoin, Karl Sebastian Greenwood, received a 20-year prison sentence last September and was ordered to forfeit $300 million. Meanwhile, the whereabouts of co-founder Ruja Ignatova, known as the “Cryptoqueen,” remain unknown since 2017. OneCoin’s fraudulent activities surfaced in 2015, yet it continued to amass billions in revenue until 2016, despite ongoing investigations.
