Ukrainian authorities have arrested four men suspected of kidnapping and murdering a foreign national in a high-profile case involving bitcoins. On July 29, Kyiv police announced the apprehension of the suspects, ages 24 to 29, who now face life imprisonment if convicted. The crime, which involved a significant sum of cryptocurrency, has shocked the community.
According to the Kyiv police, the suspects targeted a 29-year-old foreign national who owned bitcoins valued at over $170,000 or nearly 7 million hryvnias. The victims were tracked to his residence, forcibly abducted, and transported to an abandoned building in Kyiv. There, the suspects coerced him into transferring his bitcoins to their crypto wallet. Once the transaction was completed, they murdered him.
To cover their tracks, the perpetrators altered the vehicle’s appearance and license plates before disposing of the body in a forested area. The Ukrainian police learned of the crime from residents in the Solomyansk district who had heard the victim’s screams during the abduction.
Police Operation and Recovery
Acting on the tip-off, police launched a special operation that led to the suspects’ arrest. During the operation, officers recovered significant evidence, including the vehicle used in the kidnapping, a sum of money, and other crucial material. The recovery of these items is expected to aid in the investigation and prosecution of the suspects.
Maria Bakardzhieva from the Police Communications Division confirmed that the detained individuals have been formally charged. The case underscores the severe risks associated with cryptocurrency and highlights the police’s commitment to tackling such violent crimes.
