Genesis Digital Assets Turns Bitcoin Mining Waste into Sustainable Heat in Sweden

Using surplus heat from its bitcoin mining data centers, Genesis Digital Assets Limited (GDA) has started a novel operation in Norsjö, Sweden, which involves heating a nearby garage. The goal of this collaboration with the Swedish business Muttern Fastigheter is to raise industry standards for sustainability and energy efficiency.

With 20 data centers, 600 MW of hash power, and more than 180,000 mining rigs, GDA is a significant player in the bitcoin mining market. GDA and Muttern Fastigheter have partnered to reuse waste heat. With the help of this initiative, a 1,200 square meter garage will receive 90,000 cubic meters of hot air each hour at 52°C, which is produced by GDA’s data centers. With winter temperatures dropping as low as -25°C in Västerbotten County, this method is very helpful there.

The initiative uses renewable energy from the nearby Vargfors Hydroelectric Power Station, aligning with GDA’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. The project was completed in under 45 days, demonstrating how technological advancements in bitcoin (BTC) mining can benefit local communities.

Community Impact and Future Plans

Abdumalik Mirakhmedov, GDA’s executive president, highlighted the project’s significance: “Our venture into heating a large garage space using computation excess heat is a practical example of how the industry can contribute positively and integrate with local communities. We are proud to pioneer these kinds of efforts because they reaffirm GDA’s role as a leader in sustainability and show how bitcoin mining byproducts can be used for community utility.”

Following the project’s success, local officials are considering similar solutions for municipal buildings. Both GDA and Muttern Fastigheter view this partnership as a model for future initiatives, potentially setting new standards for repurposing excess energy in environmentally friendly ways. This announcement follows bitcoin mining company MARA’s recent disclosure of using BTC mining heat to warm a town of over 11,000 residents in Finland.
