In an event that has blended art, satire, and cryptocurrency culture, Tron blockchain founder and billionaire Justin Sun ate what might be the world’s most expensive banana. This unusual act took place during a news conference in Hong Kong, where Sun consumed the fruit from Maurizio Cattelan’s infamous artwork, Comedian.
The piece, featuring a single banana taped to a wall with silver duct tape, has been a focal point of debate since its debut at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019. While Cattelan described the work as “a sincere commentary and a reflection on what we value,” critics have questioned its artistic merit.
The limited-edition Comedian initially sold two of its three versions for $120,000 each. However, Sun acquired the second edition at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on November 21 for a staggering $6.24 million.
Art Meets Appetite
Sun’s decision to eat the banana from Comedian has sparked widespread discussion. Following the act, he shared his reflections on the peculiar experience, noting, “Many friends have asked me about the taste of the banana. To be honest, for a banana with such a back story, the taste is naturally different from an ordinary one. I could discern a hint of what Big Mike bananas from 100 years ago might have tasted like.”
As part of the auction deal, Sun also received the artwork’s certificate of authenticity, installation instructions, and a roll of duct tape for recreating the piece.

Cattelan’s Comedian has always aimed to challenge conventional notions of art and value, and Sun’s actions seem to have extended that conversation. The artwork’s appeal lies not in the fruit itself but in the dialogue it generates about wealth, authenticity, and the intersection of art and commerce.
