Nirmala Sitharaman Reappointed as India’s Finance Minister

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reappointed Nirmala Sitharaman as Finance Minister, continuing her tenure that began in 2019. Sitharaman, who presented her sixth budget earlier this year, has been instrumental in directing India’s economic policies and reforms.

A significant concern among Indian cryptocurrency investors is the stringent taxation rules. Since the introduction of new regulations in 2022, India imposes a 30% flat tax on income from the sale or transfer of cryptocurrencies, covering all trades and purchases. Additionally, income earned from cryptocurrencies, such as staking or airdrops, is taxed based on its fair market value at the time of receipt. Moreover, a 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) applies to transactions exceeding ₹50,000 ($600), deducted at the time of the transaction.

The Indian government has not yet developed a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies but acknowledges the potential risks, including their use in illegal activities like money laundering and terrorism financing.

International Cooperation and Regulatory Stance

Sitharaman has consistently stressed the importance of international cooperation in regulating crypto assets due to their cross-border nature and technological complexities. She has maintained a cautious stance, asserting that cryptocurrencies cannot be considered legal tender in India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country’s central bank, has also expressed concerns about the financial stability risks posed by cryptocurrencies.

Sitharaman’s reappointment signals continuity in India’s approach to economic management and crypto regulation. Her tenure has seen a blend of caution and progressive policy-making, particularly in handling the complexities of the burgeoning crypto market. With ongoing discussions about crypto regulations, her emphasis on international collaboration remains a crucial aspect of her strategy.
