Argentina’s political scene is set for a heads-up between two contrasting economic perspectives. On one side, we have the current Finance Minister, Sergio Massa, and on the other, the self-proclaimed anarcho-capitalist, Javier Milei. The country’s presidential election, due next month, will feature these candidates following their close finishes in the recent first round of voting.
In a surprise result of last Sunday’s voting, Massa took the lead with 37% of votes, while Milei, the anticipated favorite post his August primary victory, secured 30%. With the run-off election scheduled for November 19, both candidates are strategizing to gain favor from voters who previously supported Patricia Bullrich. She finished third, capturing around 24% of the initial votes.

A vocal supporter of bitcoin, Milei believes it “represents the return of money to its original creator, the private sector.” He’s been notably critical of Argentina’s central banking system, deeming it a “scam” and has advocated for the “dollarization” of Argentina’s economy, especially in light of its soaring inflation rate of 124.4%. Yet, analysts from Barclays pointed out that the general public might not be fully on board with the idea of dollarization.
On the contrary, Massa opposes the idea of dollarizing the economy. Instead, he suggests the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) as a potential remedy to Argentina’s persistent inflation issue
