SEC Approves Bitcoin ETF Options for Major US Exchanges

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for Bitcoin (BTC) options have received official approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for two major U.S. exchanges. With this move, investors now have more options in the cryptocurrency space, which is a huge step.
The SEC has officially announced that it has given the go-ahead for options contracts for Bitcoin-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). These approvals follow the SEC’s earlier approval of a Nasdaq-proposed rule change that would have allowed the company to list options on the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).
The SEC’s approval signals confidence in the stability and potential of Bitcoin ETF options. The regulatory body explained that the approval of options on BTC-based ETFs aims to boost liquidity and enhance price efficiency. Additionally, it seeks to reduce market volatility by enabling hedging strategies for investors.
Increased Transparency and Market Efficiency
The exchanges believe these options contracts will significantly benefit the market. “As discussed herein, the Exchange believes, like the recently-approved options on IBIT, options on the Bitcoin Funds would permit hedging, and allow for more liquidity, better price efficiency, and less volatility with respect to the underlying funds,” the SEC statement notes. It further highlights that the introduction of Bitcoin ETF options will increase transparency in the market, making it more efficient.
In September, Jeff Park, head of alpha strategies at Bitwise, expressed optimism about the SEC’s move to approve BlackRock’s IBIT options listing on Nasdaq. He noted, “Things will likely get wild” with these developments, explaining that Bitcoin’s supply constraints make it ideal for regulated options markets. He added that “it’s going to be unbelievably fantastic,” given Bitcoin’s decentralized nature, which contrasts with traditional markets that can be halted in extreme conditions.
