Two teenagers in Hamilton, Ontario, are in trouble after being accused by the local police of participating in a significant bitcoin heist. The extraordinary amount of CAD4.2 million (US$3 million) in stolen digital assets pales in comparison to the astounding amount found in the teens’ wallets when they were apprehended.
Authorities stated that some of the stolen money was used to buy social media accounts, and the two young people from Hamilton had an incredible collection of cryptocurrencies valued at CAD13.4 million (US$10 million), according to the authorities. In an interview with CBC Hamilton, Constable Krista-Lee Ernst said that a collaborative investigation with the FBI and the US Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force was started in June 2023.

Unveiling the Deceptive Tactics of Cyber Fraudsters
The pair, who went by the identities “Felon” and “Gaze,” used deceptive methods, especially spear phishing, to deceive their unsuspecting victim into giving over their Ethereum and Bitcoin assets, according to a statement released by Constable Ernst. Spear phishing includes impersonating trustworthy people or organizations in order to trick victims into disclosing crucial account information.
The victim was fully ignorant that the people contacting him were not, as they claimed to be, Coinbase Support staff, making their scam astonishingly effective. As a result, he unintentionally gave the thieves all the information they needed to enter his account and take his money.
The adolescent thieves had a rather low threshold for how they used the stolen money, according to Constable Ernst’s additional explanation. One early transaction worth mentioning was their purchase of the much sought-after Instagram account “@zombie.” Due to its rarity, this specific username is extremely valuable among the gaming community, albeit it is unknown how much the thieves paid for it.
