Tether’s USDT Usage in Sanctioned Countries Raises Questions During Regulatory Scrutiny
(Originally posted on : Crypto News – iGaming.org )
Some places, especially sanctioned nations, may be witnessing a boom in the use of Tether (USDT), the largest stablecoin by market capitalization. Bloomberg cited data from Chainalysis that points to possible increases in USDT use in the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe—regions that include sanctioned countries like Iran and Russia.
Possible Uptick in Tether Activity in Sanctioned Areas
Between January 1 and October 8, there was an increase in the use of USDT wallets for the first time, according to chainalysis data, especially in the late morning to early afternoon hours in places like Moscow, Tehran, Kigali, and Istanbul. Chainalysis notes that these results are not definitive, nevertheless. The analytics company’s spokesman pointed out that USDT usage trends do not always correspond to a rise in acceptance in sanctioned countries, emphasizing that cryptocurrency wallets are accessible anywhere, at any time.
This such pattern coincides with Tether being investigated for possible compliance problems by US regulatory agencies. According to reports, the Treasury Department is considering imposing penalties on Tether because of worries about the stablecoin’s “widespread use” in areas where the United States has imposed restrictions. This has increased conjecture on USDT’s function in international financial transactions.
Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino swiftly dismissed these claims, criticizing media outlets for what he described as recycled narratives. “At Tether, we deal regularly and directly with law enforcement officials to help prevent rogue nations, terrorists, and criminals from misusing USDT,” he said. Ardoino stressed that Tether has not been notified of any investigations, reinforcing the company’s stance that such allegations are “unequivocally false.”
Despite ongoing scrutiny, Tether remains committed to regulatory compliance. The stablecoin’s potential role in markets affected by sanctions highlights the broader conversation around regulatory oversight in the crypto industry, as regulators strive to address the unique challenges of digital asset transactions across borders.
