US Prosecutors Target 3-Year Jail Term for Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao

The creator of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, appears to have an uncertain future ahead of him as US prosecutors seek a 36-month prison term on grounds of grave legal violations.
U.S. prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of Zhao’s violations of anti-money laundering statutes in a recent court filing, arguing in favor of a 36-month jail sentence. They contend that this would act as a disincentive to Zhao and other individuals who would be inclined to put profits ahead of adhering to US laws.
“Zhao committed serious crimes in a deliberate scheme to grow Binance as quickly as possible and then to maintain its dominance as the largest cryptocurrency exchange. His crimes warrant meaningful prison time,” stated the prosecutors.
Calculation and Consequences
According to the prosecution’s narrative, Zhao’s actions were meticulously orchestrated to propel Binance’s rapid expansion and secure its position as the premier cryptocurrency exchange. Central to their argument is the assertion that Zhao neglected to establish and uphold an effective know-your-customer (KYC) system. This failure, they claim, facilitated illicit transactions on the platform, allowing suspicious and criminal actors to operate unchecked.
In November 2023, Zhao had already acknowledged that he had broken the Bank Secrecy Act. He is currently free on a $175 million release bond in the United States, but his sentence hearing is not until April 30. Zhao requested to visit Dubai, but a U.S. judge denied his request, citing worries that his large fortune would pose a serious flight risk.
