Buterin noted, however, that it\u2019s quite possible there\u2019s still a risk of delay, and The Merge could happen in September or October 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The Merge Could Happen in August, Buterin Says<\/h2>\n<p>Just recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\">Vitalik Buterin<\/a> spoke at the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8l67wJ3Wcbc\">ETH Shanghai Web 3.0 Developer Summit<\/a> and Ethereum\u2019s co-founder discussed the highly-anticipated proof-of-stake (PoS) transition. The Merge is scheduled to go live on Ethereum\u2019s testnet Ropsten in 18 days on June 8, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>During the <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ETH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ETH<\/a> Shanghai Summit, Buterin explained that the transition will be a major test for the entire Ethereum ecosystem. \u201cThis will be a major test, larger than any of the tests that we have done before,\u201d Buterin stressed. \u201cTaking a large existing test network with many applications with proof-of-work, moving into proof-of-stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_527492\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-527492\" style=\"width: 612px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-527492\" title=\"ETH Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Says The Merge Could Happen in August, There's Also 'Risk of Delay'\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/0cvkn9z7m6nqo5zex.jpeg\" alt=\"ETH Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Says The Merge Could Happen in August, There's Also 'Risk of Delay'\" width=\"612\" height=\"676\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-527492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ethereum roadmap which includes The Merge, The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Furthermore, Buterin confirmed that The Merge may be implemented by August, as <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/ETH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ETH<\/a> software developer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/preston_vanloon\">Preston Van Loon<\/a> had said the same at the Permissionless conference. However, while Buterin did mention the month of August, he also eluded to delays.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf there are no problems then the merge will happen in August,\u201d the Ethereum co-founder said. \u201cBut of course, there\u2019s always a risk of problems. There\u2019s also a risk of delays. And so September is possible and October is possible as well,\u201d Buterin added.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, The Merge is the first of Ethereum\u2019s major upgrades following the London upgrade, which implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/ethereum-has-destroyed-8-10-billion-in-ether-eth-scarcity-to-increase-after-the-merge\/\">ETH\u2019s burn mechanism<\/a>. Following The Merge, Ethereum will implement The Surge, The Verge, The Purge, and finally The Splurge.<\/li>\n<li>The Surge aims to help improve scaling by leveraging <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalik.ca\/general\/2021\/01\/05\/rollup.html\">zero-knowledge rollups (ZK-rollups)<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalik.ca\/general\/2021\/04\/07\/sharding.html\">sharding techniques<\/a>.
