The information was discovered by the software developer Banteg who analyzed and saved the shared logs from Uniswap\u2019s server. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>30 out of the 253 Blocked Addresses Are ENS Domain Names, Uniswap Labels 7 Types of Risk Factor Categories<\/h2>\n<p>On August 19, the software developer and Yearn Finance contributor Banteg published a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bantg\/status\/1560711564801544193?s=20&amp;t=5NZDDKUcrX4bqUxpLKY_uQ\">Twitter thread<\/a> that claims the dex Uniswap blocks 253 crypto addresses. \u201cUniswap has provided an unusual level of transparency,\u201d Banteg said in regard to \u201cfrontend censoring via TRM Labs.\u201d Uniswap <a href=\"https:\/\/help.uniswap.org\/en\/articles\/6149816-address-screening-faq\">partnered<\/a> with TRM Labs in mid-April and the firm blacklists crypto addresses that may be associated with sanctions and crypto crimes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_543289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-543289\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-543289 size-full\" title=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fai4ovqveaappt7.jpeg\" alt=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" width=\"1200\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fai4ovqveaappt7-300x161.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fai4ovqveaappt7-1024x550.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fai4ovqveaappt7-768x412.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fai4ovqveaappt7.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-543289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Github repo screenshot shared by Banteg on August 19, 2022.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same month, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/decentralized-finance-crypto-exchange-uniswap-starts-blocking-addresses-linked-to-blocked-activities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appeared that indicated a few innocent Uniswap users were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/0x9fd\/status\/1517481380313444353?s=21&amp;t=schMHghx-5M6YL_9bIYwWg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the TRM Labs-gated front end. At the time, no one was sure about exactly how many crypto addresses were blacklisted by Uniswap\u2019s TRM Labs-gated front end. Banteg says there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bantg\/status\/1560711591104057349?s=20&amp;t=5NZDDKUcrX4bqUxpLKY_uQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">253 addresses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 30 addresses are ENS domain names. The developer also noted that there are seven different types of risk factor categories and two risk levels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth ownership and being a counterparty of a \u2018bad\u2019 address are checked and can contribute to blocking,\u201d Banteg <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bantg\/status\/1560711571952865285?s=20&amp;t=5NZDDKUcrX4bqUxpLKY_uQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Banteg, the data \u201cwasn\u2019t meant to be public\u201d but the developer noted that people could still have an \u201cexclusive look at the very first [TRM Labs] leak, courtesy of Uniswap.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Smart Contracts and Code Are Defi, Not the Web Platforms That Host Them<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news follows the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/us-government-bans-ethereum-mixer-tornado-cash-platform-added-to-ofacs-sdn-list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. government ban of Tornado Cash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the ethereum mixing protocol that leverages Coinjoin and ZKsnark technology. After Tornado Cash was banned an open source developer was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/dutch-law-enforcement-arrests-suspected-tornado-cash-developer-in-amsterdam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Github code was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/ofacs-tornado-cash-ban-causes-github-suspensions-and-the-blacklisting-of-crypto-addresses-holding-437m\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erased<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Tornado Cash Github codebase contributors were suspended, and the project\u2019s Discord server was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-community-responds-to-tornado-cash-sanctions-privacy-advocates-say-there-are-many-legitimate-reasons-to-seek-financial-anonymity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deleted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-543293 size-full\" title=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffd.jpg\" alt=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" width=\"1000\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffd-300x69.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffd-768x177.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffd.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the non-profit that focuses on policy issues facing crypto assets, Coin Center, believes the U.S. Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) \u201coverstepped its legal authority.\u201d Coin Center is researching the legalities of the Tornado Cash ban and plans to \u201cengage\u201d with OFAC to discuss the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-543292 size-full\" title=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/defidad.jpg\" alt=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" width=\"1000\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/defidad-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/defidad-768x307.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/defidad.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Uniswap has been updating its TRM Labs-gated front end, there\u2019s likely a whole lot more crypto companies and decentralized finance (defi) protocols following the same measures. For instance, on August 8, Banteg <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bantg\/status\/1556712790894706688?s=20&amp;t=67SeTEdZiX_O0UOf79oluQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Centre Consortium, the stablecoin issuer operated by Circle Financial and Coinbase Global, blacklisted 75,000 USDC that belonged to Tornado Cash users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think this is the first case when a pool has been frozen and not an individual account,\u201d Banteg said at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The issues surrounding Tornado Cash and the precautions taken by defi teams like Uniswap, expose the underlying weakness in so-called \u2018decentralized finance\u2019 protocols and whether or not they truly are decentralized.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-543294\" title=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffdds.jpg\" alt=\"Uniswap Censors 253 Crypto Addresses Blacklisted for Crime, Sanction Associations\" width=\"557\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffdds-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffdds-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ffdds.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Even before Tornado Cash was banned by the U.S. government, Tornado Cash developers <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/eth-mixer-tornado-cash-reveals-blocking-ofac-sanctioned-ethereum-addresses-via-chainalysis-oracle-contract\/\">blacklisted<\/a> an OFAC-listed ethereum address using a Chainalysis oracle contract. The fact is that Uniswap is a company registered in the U.S. and the frontend, or website, is owned by the U.S. entity.
