Citadel CEO Ken Griffin says inflation may have peaked but a recession is coming. <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019re in a very uncertain time for investors,\u201d the executive cautioned, adding that the Federal Reserve \u201cis grappling with a level of inflation we haven\u2019t seen in a long time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Citadel\u2019s Ken Griffin on U.S. Economy, Inflation, Recession, and Cryptocurrency<\/h2>\n

Kenneth Griffin, founder and CEO of global investment firm Citadel, shared his views on a variety of topics, including the U.S. economy and cryptocurrency, at the CNBC Delivering Alpha conference Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very uncertain time,\u201d he began. \u201cWe are grappling with the threat of nuclear war in Ukraine. We\u2019re grappling with unprecedented central bank interventions. We\u2019re grappling with record-high inflation in the United States in our lifetimes. We\u2019re in a very uncertain time for investors,\u201d Griffin stressed.<\/p>\n

Noting that the U.S. equity market is showing \u201ca level of resiliency\u201d and the U.S. economy \u201cis still strong,\u201d he asserted:<\/p>\n

We\u2019re probably looking at peak inflation having just occurred or just about to occur. So the forward trajectory on a number of key fronts looks somewhat better domestically, again, assuming nothing goes totally off the rails abroad.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Regarding whether the U.S. economy will slide into a recession, he opined: \u201cEverybody likes to forecast recessions, and there will be one, it\u2019s just a question of when and, frankly, how hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Citadel boss continued: \u201cAnd is it possible that end of \u201923 we have a hard landing? Absolutely.\u201d He further shared that his investment firm is \u201cvery focused on the possibility of a recession\u201d as part of risk management.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Fed is grappling with a level of inflation we haven\u2019t seen in a long time. They have a very limited toolkit,\u201d Griffin stressed, warning that the Federal Reserve can raise interest rates but it \u201chas very adverse consequences,\u201d such as to home builders and auto manufacturers. However, the executive believes that \u201cright now, the American consumer is feeling pretty good about where things stand on an absolute basis.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Citadel founder proceeded to talk about Europe. \u201cThere\u2019s a war in Europe. There is record inflation,\u201d he said, adding:<\/p>\n

Europe is probably already in a recession because of the high cost and scarcity of energy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nonetheless, he pointed out that while the market is down, \u201cit\u2019s not down as much as you probably would have thought if you looked at the news headlines.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffin was also asked about cryptocurrency. \u201cThere\u2019s a bit of an intergenerational fight here,\u201d he began. \u201cI see my younger colleagues much more crypto-centric than my older colleagues, and for good reasons, including, ironically, sort of a libertarian view of the world.\u201d The Citadel CEO described:<\/p>\n

As our government gets bigger and bigger, a certain number of people sort of feel like, you know what, I want the privacy \u2026 want to pull away from government.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSo what\u2019s interesting is we see people pulling away from big governments when they look at assets like cryptocurrency, which is a real irony given how people view government can solve so many other problems,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
