Since then, a number of \u2018sleeping bitcoins\u2019 that sat idle for five to nine years have been moving during the last four days. Bitcoins that were worth far less back then are being transferred for the first time in years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>$20M Worth of Old Bitcoins Move After Sitting Dormant for Years<\/h2>\n<p>Bitcoin\u2019s (<a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a>) price has remained steady during the last seven days, ranging between $16,150 to $16,995 per unit, and a brief jump over the $17K zone. Over the last four days, while <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> prices are much lower than they were at the start of November, hundreds of old bitcoins have been on the move.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, two owners spent 348 bitcoin on Nov. 29, 2022, and the stash was once worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/money\/ask\/bitcoin+price+mar+2017+cst\">$348,000<\/a>. We can\u2019t really tell whether or not the transferred coins were sold, but they were spent from addresses created almost six years ago. Heuristics also indicate that out of the 348 bitcoin that sat dormant since March 2017, 299 of that <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> likely belonged to the same owner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_562409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-562409\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-562409 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dd7829303003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dd7829303003-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dd7829303003-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dd7829303003-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/dd7829303003.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-562409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The five 59.99 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> spends discovered by btcparser.com were all from the same owner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 348 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> is worth roughly 5.8 million nominal U.S. dollars using current <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> exchange rates. One owner controlled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/17HxAzvLPyVCo2qBKeZR7M3dTt9mUoUk71\">17HxA<\/a>,\u201d an address created on March 29, 2017, and it spent 48.88 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> at block height 765,168. Coincidently, five more transactions, from addresses created at the end of March 2017, spent 59.99 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> in each transaction at block heights <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/13QgzxprVpKasbAb5ijNZT6JWeGURDdm3b\">765,169<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/1251psN6z3Bc9AXTM2PgUiMpaScxhU2zuq\">765,184<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/18FGw4Jbzc5DiWQBkJz3DumdNiKNDEszAY\">765,185<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/1BBpfjMbJT9UZo9wE74iVjFWApDhermEza\">765,187<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/1LbNwEvoe6B8KJ4mPYAUG8DTdqqKX5YRYy\">765,190<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, blockchain parsers from btcparser.com <a href=\"https:\/\/btcparser.com\/?a=1B8oVQVZA6rf2yC1CBU73pVfPruyeaQLbL\">caught<\/a> a 173.61 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> spend from an idle address created on June 14, 2017, and another 100 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> spend from an <a href=\"https:\/\/btcparser.com\/?a=1DSvmeucMwzJ6Aq2EV5UxjkibZ9xY1SDCG\">address<\/a> created on April 12, 2014. The 100 bitcoin sat in an address idle for close to nine years, and at the time, each <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> was worth less than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/money\/ask\/bitcoin+price+april+2014+cst\">$500 per unit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following these old spends, a transaction from an address first seen close to ten years ago, on April 26, 2013, beat all the spends transacted on Nov. 29, 2022. The transaction took place on Dec. 2, 2022, and the wallet \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/address\/1EaAvPHKqFu3YgmUems6orKWZgTV8xdzGJ\">1EaAv<\/a>\u201d spent 600 so-called \u2018sleeping bitcoins.\u2019 The 600 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> was worth around $84,000 on April 26, 2013, and today the coins that were spent at block height 765,644, are worth roughly $10.14 million using current <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> exchange rates.<\/p>\n<p>Data shows that out of all the bitcoins spent since Nov. 29, which slept for roughly five to nine years, all of them combined were worth less than $800K in value at the time the original addresses were created. Using exchange rates today, the 1,221.45 <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> that stemmed from \u2018sleeping bitcoin\u2019 addresses equates to around $20 million.
