FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) had a difficult day in court on Monday according to a number of accounts that said SBF\u2019s local attorney seemed to be in conflict with his U.S. legal team. Furthermore, courtroom reports noted that SBF dozed off for an extended period of time and had to be shaken awake by an official.<\/strong><\/p>\n

SBF\u2019s Day in Court After Close to a Week in Fox Hill Prison Doesn\u2019t Go so Smoothly<\/h2>\n

According to a number of reports on Monday, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) was transferred back to Fox Hill prison<\/a> after a \u201cconfusing turn of events\u201d in court, according<\/a> to the local island media publication The Tribune. SBF\u2019s local lawyer, Jerone Roberts, \u201cappeared at odds with [SBF\u2019s] U.S. legal team,\u201d the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported<\/a> the same day.<\/p>\n

The Tribune and other reports<\/a> detailed that SBF had mentioned to the judge that he had not yet seen his U.S. indictment. Roberts was allegedly unaware that his client SBF was supposed to be in court on Monday as well. \u201cI did not request him to be here this morning,\u201d Roberts proclaimed to the court.<\/p>\n

Court witnesses say SBF is heavily guarded and he\u2019s been carrying a manila folder of legal documents with him. Numerous reports said that he had to read his U.S. indictment for the first time. The indictment contains eight financial fraud and conspiracy charges that stem from a grand jury from the Southern District of New York.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Tribune, the New York Times<\/a>, WSJ, and Reuters<\/a> all detail that SBF\u2019s lawyers have hashed out plans for the FTX co-founder\u2019s extradition to the United States. Reports further elaborated that Bankman-Fried only spoke with the judge, magistrate Shaka Serville, two times during the entire hearing.<\/p>\n

At one point SBF supposedly closed his eyes and fell asleep during the hearing, only to be jostled awake by one of the courtroom officials. A \u201cReuters witness\u201d told the publication that SBF was allowed to speak to his U.S. attornies over the phone.<\/p>\n

Reports detailed that SBF was \u201cvisibly shaking\u201d and it was also reported that the FTX co-founder dozed off during a part of the proceedings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Various<\/a> reports claimed<\/a> Bankman-Fried was \u201cvisibly shaking\u201d in court. \u201cSBF is wearing a blue suit, white shirt, dress shoes, very disheveled,\u201d NBC reporter Ezra Kaplan wrote<\/a>. \u201cHe was often seen with his head in hands, knees shaking, holding a Manila folder. [The] courtroom is full. No AC. Packed with media and folks in the crypto community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bahamas\u2019 deputy director of legal affairs Franklyn Williams called the court proceedings \u201cincredible,\u201d and a number of reports expressed that SBF needed to review his indictment before deciding on whether or not he would be extradited. By the end of the confusing ordeal, SBF was led to a black corrections van with his paperwork.<\/p>\n

His legal team in the U.S. hopes to have everything resolved by Tuesday. After SBF left the court his Bahamian lawyer Roberts noted<\/a> that as far as the extradition is concerned, \u201ccounsel will prepare the necessary documents to trigger the court.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bahamian magistrate Serville is said<\/a> to have conveyed to the press that the courtroom appearance by SBF on Monday was basically a \u201cwasted day,\u201d before remanding him back to Fox Hill prison. After SBF read his indictment, a person familiar with the matter told the WSJ that SBF \u201cagreed to be extradited\u201d and \u201cplans were being fleshed out by his legal team after the day\u2019s court proceedings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts further spoke<\/a> to the local Eyewitness News at Long Wharf in The Bahamas near the entrance of Arawak Cay, and he told reporters that \u201chis legal team is now preparing the necessary legal documents [for extradition], adding that he hoped SBF would be returned to court this week.\u201d While some reports say SBF will be back in court on Tuesday, others cannot confirm whether or not this is true.<\/p>\n
