This would be a significant achievement, as RSA encryption is widely used in current security practices. However, a number of experts, computer scientists, and cryptographers do not believe the researchers have made a significant discovery, based on the scientific paper published in Dec. 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Quantum Computing Race Heats Up as Chinese Researchers Claim Breakthrough in RSA Encryption<\/h2>\n<p>In Sept. 2022, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/bitcoin-vs-quantum-computers-us-government-says-post-quantum-world-is-getting-closer-cisa-warns-contemporary-encryption-could-break\/\">warned<\/a> that a post-quantum world was coming soon and stressed that contemporary encryption techniques could break. Months later, in December 2022, a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2212.12372.pdf\">scientific paper<\/a> published by 24 Chinese researchers claimed to have broken 2048-bit RSA encryption using a quantum computer. The paper follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/ideas\/2022\/04\/china-may-have-just-taken-lead-quantum-computing-race\/365707\/\">report<\/a> from April 2022 that detailed that China was \u201ctaking the lead\u201d in the quantum computing race.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-567553 size-full\" title=\"Chinese Researchers Claim Success in Breaking RSA Encryption With Quantum Computer, Experts Debate Veracity of Discovery\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese Researchers Claim Success in Breaking RSA Encryption With Quantum Computer, Experts Debate Veracity of Discovery\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj-190x107.jpg 190w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj-380x214.jpg 380w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj-760x428.jpg 760w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jjjjjjjj.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Basically, a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/breaking-bitcoin-crypto-proponents-discuss-honeywells-6-qubit-quantum-computer\/\">quantum computer<\/a> is a type of computational device that uses quantum-mechanical phenomena and can perform operations on data faster than classical computers can perform computational tasks. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RSA_(cryptosystem)\">RSA<\/a> is named after its creators, Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard Adleman, and is widely used on today\u2019s computer systems. It is an example of a public-key cryptography system, which means that modern computers often use it to encrypt and decrypt messages.<\/p>\n<p>On January 5, 2023, the Financial Times (FT) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b15680c0-cf31-448d-9eb6-b30426c29b8b\">reported<\/a> on the paper that alleges Chinese researchers have claimed success in breaking RSA encryption. FT questioned a few experts about the paper, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cryptography-Apocalypse-Preparing-Quantum-Computing\/dp\/1119618193\">Roger Grimes<\/a>, a computer security expert and author, told FT: \u201cIt\u2019s a huge claim \u2014 It would mean that governments could crack other governments\u2019 secrets. If it\u2019s true \u2014 a big if \u2014 it would be a secret like out of the movies, and one of the biggest things ever in computer science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is also a Google Groups <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/list.nist.gov\/g\/pqc-forum\/c\/AkfdRQS4yoY\/m\/3plDftUEAgAJ?pli=1\">conversation<\/a> where people are debating whether Chinese researchers have factored in 2048-bit integers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/blog\/about\/\">Bruce Schneier<\/a>, a computer security and cryptography expert, published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneier.com\/blog\/archives\/2023\/01\/breaking-rsa-with-a-quantum-computer.html\">analysis<\/a> and stated that the paper relies on a <a href=\"https:\/\/eprint.iacr.org\/2021\/933\">disputed paper<\/a> written by Peter Schnorr, a German mathematician. Schneier also shared his opinion with the Financial Times about the so-called quantum computing breakthrough. \u201cWe have no empirical proof that the [new] quantum algorithm overcomes the Schnorr scaling problem,\u201d Schneier told the FT. \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to believe it won\u2019t\u2014but there\u2019s no reason to believe it will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quantum computing\u2019s potential to break contemporary encryption techniques has worried crypto proponents for some time. However, some believe that if quantum computers can break encryption, it will be a closely guarded secret. When asked if he thought a quantum computer could break Bitcoin\u2019s cryptography, Bitcoin evangelist Andreas Antonopoulos once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/5wc9bj\/is_bitcoin_quantumproof_andreas_explains\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe last thing they are going to use that on is Bitcoin.\u201d Antonopoulos added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Cause the moment you use it on Bitcoin you announce to the world we have quantum cryptography that can break [the] elliptic curve \u2014 Guess what happens?
