One of the transactions was a 3.94 MB Ordinal inscription featuring an image of a wizard, and the Bitcoin-issued non-fungible token (NFT) has generated significant discussion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Small Block Advocates Speak Out Against the 4 MB Bitcoin Block With NFT Inscription<\/h2>\n<p>On Feb. 1, 2023, the Luxor mining pool mined the largest block (<a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/block\/774628\">#774,628<\/a>) ever recorded on the Bitcoin network, approximately 3.96 MB. The coinbase parameter of the block contains a message indicating its discovery by Luxor. The mining pool also took to Twitter to inform the community about the discovery and the reason for the large size of the block.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night, Luxor harnessed its magic energy and freed an ancient wizard from his cosmic cage where he had been trapped for many epochs,\u201d the mining pool <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LuxorTechTeam\/status\/1620921129287430144?s=20&amp;t=9MkAevku-aUf-86Jd2RFaw\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cKeen observers of the chain of time may have noticed a 4 MB anomaly, unlike anything seen before. Will there be others?\u201d The tweet also included an image of the \u201cTaproot Wizard,\u201d an <a href=\"https:\/\/ordinals.com\/inscription\/0301e0480b374b32851a9462db29dc19fe830a7f7d7a88b81612b9d42099c0aei0\">Ordinal inscription #652<\/a>, attached to the block. Taproot, a feature applied to the Bitcoin network on Nov. 12, 2021, was activated at block height 709,632 and brought several new benefits to <a class=\"lar-automated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a> users.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A 3.96 MB block #774628 has been just added to Bitcoin by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LuxorTechTeam?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LuxorTechTeam<\/a> exploiting buggy Taproot! Since the creation of Ordinals, it has been <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ercwl\/status\/1619323900982349824?s=20&amp;t=K7_KAiu9nXVnzF8Df-uGGw\">discovered<\/a> that using a Segregated Witness (Segwit) \u201cdiscount\u201d in combination with Taproot allows for a full block to be 4 MB in size, bypassing the 1 MB limit encoded in the Bitcoin blockchain. It was previously known that Segwit slightly increased block sizes, with the largest block before Luxor\u2019s 3.96 MB being 2.765 MB (<a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/block\/748918\">#748,918<\/a>) mined on Aug. 11, 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Concerns Raised Over Immutable Nature of Bitcoin and So-Called \u2018Dangerous\u2019 Content<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ordinals were <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/meet-ordinals-the-new-bitcoin-nft-engine-and-the-drama-surrounding-them\/\">already controversial<\/a> among some bitcoin maximalists, and the 4 MB block mined with only 63 transactions and a Wizard JPEG caused further upset. For instance, bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr, who called Ordinals an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukeDashjr\/status\/1619772647143006210?s=20&amp;t=NsArusHHyEuEFtIrI8d-Wg\">attack<\/a>,\u201d quickly created a node patch to filter or censor Ordinal \u201cspam.\u201d \u201cNOT a protocol change or soft fork\/hard fork, just a harmless (if it works right) spam filter,\u201d Dashjr <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukeDashjr\/status\/1620876981830295552?s=20&amp;t=c99kHPRCoU5UwSfi1T1TlA\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cAlso a quick hack and NOT suitable for opening a PR to Core \u2013 please write a proper fix for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_571970\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-571970\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-571970 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dddf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dddf-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dddf-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dddf-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dddf.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-571970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blockchair.com\/bitcoin\/block\/774628\">The record-breaking 3.96 MB Bitcoin block (#774,628) mined on Feb. 1, 2023.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many bitcoin advocates were dissatisfied with the record-breaking block size, and the topic was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/10r6t1l\/the_first_4_mb_block_in_bitcoin_history_mined_by\/\">discussed<\/a> on the Reddit forum r\/bitcoin. The most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/10r6t1l\/comment\/j6ualii\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web2x&amp;context=3\">upvoted comment<\/a> in the thread read: \u201cI would much rather see such a block full of real monetary transactions from thousands of people, instead of this idiocy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another individual agreed with this opinion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/10r6t1l\/comment\/j6ud8oe\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web2x&amp;context=3\">argued<\/a> that the Taproot scheme that produced a 4 MB block was dangerous. \u201cYeah \u2026 This is rather dangerous. We\u2019re one bad actor or one automated miner away from cementing vile and disgusting things to a permanent, globally distributed, uncensorable database. Although the image was removed from the Ordinals website, it remains immutable and cannot be removed from the Bitcoin blockchain. Furthermore, a game, \u201cDOOM,\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hlopez_\/status\/1620936502317563904?s=20&amp;t=2JvRluiwr133LpQqZP4oxg\">uploaded<\/a> to the blockchain and can be found in inscription #466.<\/p>\n<p>Some bitcoin advocates expressed dissatisfaction with the mining pool Luxor, which mined the 4 MB block. One person responded to Luxor\u2019s tweet, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kiawtzin\/status\/1620934085588799490?s=20&amp;t=BrLZuUIRWQIaGcNVKo4i4g\">saying<\/a>, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing revolutionary in what you did. You stuffed a nasty JPEG with zero artistic value into the blockchain. Okay\u2026you could have crafted the same stupid image 10,000 times smaller. Why did you make it 4 MB?
