The firm added that decentralized finance (defi) protocol hacks accounted for 82.1% of all cryptocurrency stolen by hackers during the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Crypto Hacking Hit Record High in 2022<\/h2>\n<p>Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis published a section of its upcoming 2023 Crypto Crime Report on Wednesday, stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>2022 was the biggest year ever for crypto hacking, with $3.8 billion stolen from cryptocurrency businesses.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The firm explained that crypto hacking activity significantly increased in March and peaked in October \u2014 the month which \u201cbecame the biggest single month ever for cryptocurrency hacking, as $775.7 million was stolen in 32 separate attacks,\u201d Chainalysis described.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-571901\" title=\"Hackers Stole $3.8 Billion From Crypto Firms in 2022, Says Chainalysis\" src=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/crypto-hacking-chart.jpg\" alt=\"Hackers Stole $3.8 Billion From Crypto Firms in 2022, Says Chainalysis\" width=\"1017\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/crypto-hacking-chart-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/crypto-hacking-chart-768x425.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/crypto-hacking-chart.jpg 1017w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1017px) 100vw, 1017px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The firm added that \u201c82.1% of all cryptocurrency stolen by hackers \u2014 a total of $3.1 billion\u201d came from decentralized finance (defi) hacks. Noting that this percentage was up from 73.3% in 2021, the firm pointed out that $3.1 billion of 64% came from cross-chain bridge protocols specifically.<\/p>\n<p>Chainalysis also detailed that \u201cNorth Korea-linked hackers \u2026 have been by far the most prolific cryptocurrency hackers over the last few years,\u201d elaborating:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In 2022, they shattered their own records for theft, stealing an estimated $1.7 billion worth of cryptocurrency across several hacks we\u2019ve attributed to them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, the blockchain analytics firm stated that North Korea-linked hackers stole $1.1 billion of that amount from defi protocols, making North Korea \u201cone of the driving forces behind the defi hacking trend that intensified in 2022.\u201d Besides defi protocols, Chainalysis noted that \u201cNorth Korea-linked hackers also tend to send large sums to mixers, which have typically been the cornerstone of their money laundering process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firm further detailed that \u201cFor much of 2021 and 2022, North Korea-linked hackers almost exclusively used Tornado Cash to launder cryptocurrency stolen in hacks.\u201d Ethereum mixer Tornado Cash was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/us-government-bans-ethereum-mixer-tornado-cash-platform-added-to-ofacs-sdn-list\/\">sanctioned<\/a> by the U.S. government in August last year.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What do you think about hackers stealing $3.8 billion from cryptocurrency firms last year?
