On Wednesday, Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG), a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, shared an article about the Federal Reserve\u2019s Fednow project and criticized the central bank\u2019s digital currency efforts. The representative from Georgia insisted that the U.S. should return to the \u201cgold standard\u201d and said she\u2019s taking a \u201chard pass\u201d on digital currency payment systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n

MTG Blasts U.S. Central Bank\u2019s Fednow Digital Currency Program<\/h2>\n

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is known for her controversial statements and is not shy about expressing her opinions. The American politician and businesswoman has represented Georgia\u2019s 14th congressional district since 2020. On April 5, she criticized<\/a> the U.S. central bank\u2019s Fednow project, stating that the U.S. should return to the gold standard rather than relying on digital currency payment systems. \u201cHard pass,\u201d added the Congress member. Like other Republican politicians, Greene, or MTG, does not seem to support a central bank digital currency (CBDC).<\/p>\n

Texas senator Ted Cruz<\/a> and Florida governor Ron DeSantis have introduced<\/a> legislation against CBDCs. The stance of MTG on permissionless cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (BTC<\/a>) and ethereum (ETH<\/a>) is \u201cunclear,\u201d according to Coinbase\u2019s report<\/a> on the Georgia representative. Coinbase\u2019s report, which covers Congressional leaders\u2019 opinions on crypto assets, states that there is \u201cnot enough data to determine\u201d Greene\u2019s official stance. However, the report does mention that MTG spoke out on Twitter against Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s actions against a convoy of truckers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Trudeau has gone full dictator in Canada and is stealing Canadians\u2019 crypto wallets, Democrats and big banks are lining up to take their cut of #crypto and #blockchain,\u201d tweeted<\/a> Greene. \u201cJoe \u2018the big guy\u2019 Biden always gets his cut. Protect crypto owners\u2019 rights,\u201d she added. The Georgian politician also appeared<\/a> on the \u201cAmerica First with Sebastian Gorka\u201d podcast in an episode titled \u201cYour Bitcoin is in Danger.\u201d During a press briefing in November 2022, MTG discussed<\/a> the alleged theory that donated crypto funds sent to Ukraine were transferred to Sam Bankman-Fried\u2019s FTX.<\/p>\n

Many people believe that a CBDC would be a disastrous idea for the United States. Economist Richard Werner recently called<\/a> the July launch of Fednow \u201csuspicious.\u201d Former Republican congressman from Texas, Ron Paul, also criticized<\/a> the Fednow payment system three years ago, encouraging crypto competition instead. He stated, \u201cI\u2019m all for cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology because I like competing currencies.\u201d Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who has referred to herself as \u201canti-crypto,\u201d recently denounced<\/a> competing currencies like bitcoin and called for the U.S. to move towards a CBDC.<\/p>\n
