This comes after ACINQ just implemented Splicing, which allowed \u201cEclair\u201d customers to see a stunning 60% drop in Lightning transaction rates.<\/p>\n

Tackling Liquidity Constraints<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Splicing offers a reliable response to the Lightning network\u2019s long-standing liquidity limitation issue. These limitations have consistently stood in the way of the smooth flow of transactions and the widespread adoption of Lightning. By addressing these liquidity issues with Splicing, Blockstream hopes to enable more affordable and dependable transactions for Lightning users.<\/p>\n

Developer Lisa Neigut from Blockstream<\/a> emphasized the pivotal role of this feature, saying, \u201cOne of the biggest pain points for Lightning users is unreliable transaction throughput\u2014channel liquidity constraints are a big part of the equation there. Splicing is an incredible new tool for alleviating liquidity constraints, which should result in making transactions significantly cheaper and more reliable for users.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Era of Unified Wallets<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Another significant change brought about by splicing is in the area of \u201cunified wallets.\u201d In the past, customers struggled to keep track of separate Bitcoin and Lightning balances, which added needless complexity. By smoothly combining these balances, splicing modifies this environment. As a result, for regular users, the difference between Bitcoin and Lightning balances is basically irrelevant.<\/p>\n

Lead Splicing contributor Dusty Daemon underscored the user-centric approach behind this feature, stating, \u201cThe goal is to make wallets \u2018just work\u2019 instead of users having to bear the brunt of managing different account balances for different protocols. In the future, everyday users won\u2019t need to understand the difference between Lightning and Bitcoin\u2014these protocols will simply be \u2018spliced\u2019 together on the backend.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Splicing was developed in large part by Dusty Daemon, who worked together with Bastien Teinturier, CTO of ACINQ, Lisa Neigut, and Rusty Russell from Blockstream. Private donations helped to fund the creation of this functionality, including a recent gift from OpenSats, a Bitcoin non-profit with backing from Jack Dorsey.<\/p>\n

With the introduction of the Splicing period by Blockstream\u2019s Core Lightning implementation, the Lightning network is prepared for a new stage defined by increased efficiency, decreased fees, and streamlined user experiences. The goal of frictionless, user-friendly transactions inside the Bitcoin ecosystem is aligned with this update, which brings the Lightning and Bitcoin protocols closer together.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
