Stefan Berger, a member of the European Parliament, recently reported that the European Central Bank (ECB) is not about to make an urgent decision regarding the deployment of a digital euro in a report dated October 5. Berger stressed that before the ECB can decide definitively whether to move forward with a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), a number of key concerns need to be clarified.<\/p>\n

Concerns Raised by EU Parliamentarians<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In a letter, a number of EU lawmakers want the ECB to delay making the decision to introduce a digital euro<\/a>. Their main worries center on potential financial hardships for commercial banks and uncertainty over the advantages a CBDC would provide to regular consumers.<\/p>\n

Christine Lagarde, president of the ECB, has made an effort to convince parliamentarians that the introduction of a digital euro is not imminent. A central bank-controlled digital money, however, has some members of the European Parliament wary. They are concerned about possible privacy and mass monitoring dangers.<\/p>\n

The EU parliament\u2019s opposition may delay further technical development and prototype testing, even if the ECB hopes to move on to the next stage of the digital euro initiative soon. Markus Ferber and other legislators contend that the political process should be finished before getting into the specifics of the following stage.<\/p>\n

These difficulties highlight a conflict between the ECB\u2019s innovation goals and policymakers\u2019 concerns about the potential effects of a digital currency controlled by a central bank. At the moment, local legislators\u2019 unresolved issues stand in the way of the development of an EU CBDC.<\/p>\n
