The crypto market capitalization also tumbled as a sea of red engulfed altcoins<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Major altcoins saw huge declines to push the total market cap down more than 7% to $2.16 trillion. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoindogs.club\/?utm_source=media&amp;utm_medium=artc&amp;utm_campaign=coinjournal&amp;utm_term=internal&amp;utm_content=current_news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin Dogs<\/a> fell sharply as Ethereum, Solana, Pepe, and Polygon nosedived.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bitcoin slumps amid huge liquidations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BTC briefly traded at lows of $58,090 on Bitstamp and $58,025 on Coinbase on Wednesday morning before a slight recovery pushed it to above $59.2k.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-222939\" src=\"https:\/\/coinjournal.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/BTC_1D_graph_coinmarketcap.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While there hasn\u2019t been a clear catalyst for the crypto sell-off, the widespread losses suggest a broader weakness for risk assets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Santiment analysis also suggests the latest retracement follows huge bets on upside momentum. The greed that hit the market on August 25 has seen a swift reaction in liquidations, the market intelligence and on-chain analytics platform <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/santimentfeed\/status\/1828560155790975144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote on X<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/LiquidationData\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data from Coinglass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> shows total crypto liquidations have jumped 208% in the past 24 hours to over $330 million. Most of this, about $295 million, are long positions and over 90,800 traders have been liquidated in this period as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The largest liquidation is an ETH\/BTC position at $12.67 million on Binance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bitcoin Dogs mirrors BTC sell-off<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While Ethereum has dropped more than 9% to under 2,450, Solana is changing hands near $144.
