{"id":44690,"date":"2025-01-06T19:28:49","date_gmt":"2025-01-06T19:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crowdfundjunction.com\/blog\/why-is-moldovas-pro-russian-transdniestria-region-facing-power-outages\/"},"modified":"2025-01-06T19:28:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T19:28:49","slug":"why-is-moldovas-pro-russian-transdniestria-region-facing-power-outages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crowdfundjunction.com\/blog\/why-is-moldovas-pro-russian-transdniestria-region-facing-power-outages\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is Moldova\u2019s pro-Russian Transdniestria region facing power outages?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>(Originally posted on : Invezz )<\/b><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>More than 51,000 households were left without gas and 1,500 buildings had no heating in Moldova\u2019s separatist region Transdniestria, authorities told Reuters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The development comes after Ukraine had refused to transit Russian gas through its pipelines to Europe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in Moldova\u2019s Transdniestria region cut off gas supplies to several state institutions on December 29.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A deal allowing Russian gas to transit through Ukraine expired on December 31. <\/p>\n<p>Ukraine had refused to renew the deal as it is currently in a war against Russia that began in early 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Transdnietria, a majorly Russian-speaking separatist region in Moldova, had received gas from Moscow for many years. <\/p>\n<p>The region used to depend on gas from Russia to generate electricity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Russian gas was also used to provide 80% of Moldova\u2019s power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transdnietria: settlements without power<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Reuters report, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/thousands-left-without-heat-or-gas-moldovas-pro-russian-separatist-region-2025-01-06\/\" rel=\"noopener\">total of 122 settlements in Transdniestria had been cut off from receiving gas<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of apartments have been receiving gas in small amounts for cooking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in the region have also urged schools to not reopen after the winter holidays. <\/p>\n<p>Around 131 schools and 147 kindergartens were left without heat during this winter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is not a single person in Transdniestria who is guilty of this situation &#8211; it&#8217;s all an external factor,&#8221; the president in the region&#8217;s administration, Vadim Krasnoselsky, was quoted in the report.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova is a former Soviet state, situated between Russia and Romania.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moldova&#8217;s unpaid debt<\/h2>\n<p>Supply was cut off a day after Russia\u2019s Gazprom said it would suspend exports to Moldova from January 1 due to unpaid debt.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova had disputed allegations of arrears for gas imports from Russia in the past. It also accused Moscow of destabilizing the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moldova imports around 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Russia, which was piped via Ukraine to pro-Russian separatist Transdniestria.<\/p>\n<p>Gazprom had earlier claimed that Moldova had accumulated arrears of $709 million in unpaid debt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A thermal plant in Transdniestria produced cheap power with Russian imports and sold it to government-run parts of Moldova.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Romania comes to the aid<\/h2>\n<p>Since the Russian gas was cut off at the end of last month, Moldova has met domestic power needs through imports from neighboring Romania, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>According to Krasnoselsky, reports of such aid were lies and Moldova\u2019s aim was the \u201cstrangulation\u201d of Transdnietria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He was quoted by Reuters in the report:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote inv-component-break-container is-layout-flow wp-block-quote inv-component-break-container-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There have been no offers of assistance from Moldova or other states.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Krasnoselsky has urged the families in the region to use firewood to meet their power needs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The government of Moldova had accused Russian giant Gazprom of the energy crisis.
