President-elect Donald Trump sparked global controversy on Tuesday by stating that he would not rule out the use of military force to gain control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, deeming both territories vital to US national security. <\/p>\n

Trump’s vision for a “golden age of America”<\/h2>\n

Addressing reporters, Trump underscored the strategic importance of both regions, saying, \u201cThe Panama Canal is vital to our country,\u201d and adding, \u201cWe need Greenland for national security purposes.\u201d <\/p>\n

Asked whether he would commit to peaceful means, Trump declined to rule out military options, stating, \u201cIt might be that you\u2019ll have to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark and home to a major U.S. military base, has long been a focus of Arctic geopolitics. <\/p>\n

Trump cast doubts on Denmark\u2019s sovereignty over Greenland<\/a>, suggesting its acquisition would bolster US security. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Panama Canal, under Panamanian control since 1999, remains a critical waterway for global commerce.<\/p>\n

Trump characterised his vision as part of a broader effort to usher in a \u201cgolden age of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments, however, have sparked unease among allies and raised questions about the potential implications for U.S. foreign policy under his administration.<\/p>\n

US allies not impressed by Trump’s ideas<\/h2>\n

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed her country\u2019s strong alliance with the United States but dismissed any notion of U.S. annexation. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States is Denmark\u2019s most important and closest ally, but any interest in Greenland must be respectful of the Greenlandic people,\u201d Frederiksen said in an interview. <\/p>\n

She stressed that Denmark and the US must maintain cooperation within NATO.<\/p>\n

Greenland\u2019s government issued a statement clarifying that Donald Trump Jr<\/a>, who recently landed in Nuuk, was visiting as a private individual, and there would be no official meetings.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump’s fascination with Greenland isn’t a new development. <\/p>\n

During his first term as president (2017\u20132021), Trump notably expressed interest in acquiring the territory, highlighting its rich natural resources and strategic geopolitical importance.<\/p>\n

In 2019, he proposed the idea of purchasing Greenland, sparking international headlines. However, the suggestion was met with strong resistance from Danish leaders. <\/p>\n

Panama\u2019s Foreign Minister Javier Mart\u00ednez-Acha reiterated his government\u2019s position, emphasising that the canal\u2019s sovereignty is non-negotiable. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe sovereignty of our canal is not negotiable and is part of our history of struggle and an irreversible conquest,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Trump’s bid for Canada<\/h2>\n

Trump also floated the idea of Canada joining the US as its 51st state<\/a>. While he ruled out military action against Canada, he suggested leveraging \u201ceconomic force\u201d to address trade imbalances, describing the US trade deficit with its northern neighbor as a subsidy. <\/p>\n

Canadian leaders, however, pushed back firmly.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident-elect Trump\u2019s comments show a complete lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country,\u201d Canadian Foreign Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly said. <\/p>\n

Outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was more pointed, writing, \u201cThere isn\u2019t a snowball\u2019s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the \u201cGulf of America,\u201d calling it a \u201cbeautiful\u201d name. <\/p>\n

He also advocated for NATO members to increase their defense spending targets to 5% of GDP, up from the current goal of 2%.<\/p>\n
