Behnam, who has been a Democratic commissioner at the <a href=\"https:\/\/coinjournal.net\/search\/CFTC\">CFTC<\/a> since 2017 and as Chair since 2021, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past several years, a multitude of domestic and global events tested the resilience of all financial markets. I am proud that the Commission consistently made deliberate and intentional decisions to ensure continued strength. We worked to address regulatory gaps and uncertainty. We also responsibly engaged new entrants to support innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the tougher stance taken by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (<a href=\"https:\/\/coinjournal.net\/search\/Securities+and+Exchange+Commission\">SEC<\/a>) against the crypto market, the CFTC has taken a lighter approach. This despite the fact that it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/8938-24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obtained a $12.7 billion judgment against the now-defunct FTX exchange and Alameda Research<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Behnam, who has advocated for crypto regulation, said that regulation in the crypto market is lacking, calling for a need to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/25d078a1-0a64-4370-bca8-f19a6b5e8255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fill this gap<\/a>,\u201d given the increasing adoption seen by traditional financial institutions and retail and institutional investors.<\/p>\n<h2>No successor named yet<\/h2>\n<p>Trump has yet to name Behnam\u2019s successor; however, a December report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-12-12\/andreessen-crypto-policy-lead-quintenz-in-running-for-cftc-chair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> indicated that Brian Quintenz, a former CFTC Commissioner, is in the running to lead the agency.<\/p>\n<p>Quintenz currently leads policy at a16z Crypto, the digital asset arm of venture capital Andreessen Horowitz.<\/p>\n<p>Behnam\u2019s resignation comes amid a number of other agency officials resigning ahead of Trump\u2019s reappointment to the White House.
