The contract had hit a record high of $2,898.86 per ounce earlier in the session.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image inv-component-break-container size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"916\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/ik.imagekit.io\/invezz\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2550502\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/gold-rises-all-time-high-sino-us-tariff-war-2025-02-05\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump&#8217;s tariffs and China&#8217;s reaction<\/h2>\n<p>In a tit-for-tat response to the newly imposed US tariffs on Chinese goods, China retaliated with its own <a href=\"https:\/\/invezz.com\/news\/2025\/02\/04\/china-tightens-critical-metals-export-curbs-as-trumps-tariffs-take-effect\/\">set of tariffs on US imports<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This series of retaliatory actions has reignited the trade war between the world&#8217;s two largest economies, causing significant concerns in the global market.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the tension, US President Donald Trump indicated that he is not in a hurry to engage in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping to resolve the escalating trade dispute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This lack of urgency from the US administration further complicated the situation and raised questions about the potential for a prolonged and damaging trade war.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The re-escalation of the trade war has already begun to impact businesses and consumers in both countries, with fears of further economic repercussions looming large.<\/p>\n<p>The present trade conflict reminds analysts of the 2018 trade war when the two countries imposed escalating tariffs on each other&#8217;s goods. <\/p>\n<p>Analysts, however, point out that the current situation is different in some key aspects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s aiming for finding measures that maximize the impact and also minimize the risk that the Chinese economy may face&#8230; At the same time&#8230; China is trying to increase its bargaining chips,&#8221; Gary Ng, senior economist at Natixis Corporate and Investment Banking in Hong Kong was quoted as saying by Kitco.com.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rise in COMEX stocks<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTrump&#8217;s erratic tariff decisions are fuelling further uncertainty, which is benefiting gold as a safe haven. This can be seen in the continued sharp rise in Comex gold stocks,\u201d Carsten Fritsch, commodity analyst at Commerzbank AG said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gold stocks at COMEX increased by more than 290 tons in January alone.
