Smith and Safemoon CEO Braden John Karony diverted funds for personal use, prosecutors allege.\u00a0 Safemoon <a href=\"https:\/\/coinjournal.net\/news\/safemoon-files-for-bankruptcy-amid-legal-woes-and-executives-arrest\/\">filed for bankruptcy<\/a> in December 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Pollak has recommended that the US District Judge Eric Komitee accept Smith\u2019s new plea.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain and internet detective Coffeezilla, commented on the plea change:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">3 years ago we exposed SAFEMOON&#8217;s fraud. <br \/>They told their community it was just &#8220;FUD&#8221;.<br \/>Today their CTO Thomas Smith pled guilty. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MgUK6R0FcC\">pic.twitter.com\/MgUK6R0FcC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Coffeezilla (@coffeebreak_YT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/coffeebreak_YT\/status\/1892684591753785686?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Should Judge Komitee accept Smith\u2019s plea, sentencing means a potential 20 years in prison for wire fraud conspiracy. The Safemoon exec would face up to 25 years behind bars for securities fraud.<\/p>\n<h2>Safemoon execs arrested<\/h2>\n<p>The DOJ and SEC charges against Smith, Karony and Safemoon creator Kyle Nagy stem from a 2023 investigation into the crypto project.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2023, US prosecutors sued the crypto executives for misleading investors with regard to the SFM token. Charges included wire fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>According to proscutors, the defendants allegedly used the more than $200 million siphoned from investor funds to splash on luxury cars and real estate among other expensive purchases.
