For some observers, the $4.5 billion flight was not a minor blip; rather, it was a heavy, coordinated retreat by institutional allocators.<\/p>\n<p>Data shows that in May and June alone, roughly $6.5 billion was wiped from spot ETFs, representing a significant chunk of the estimated $35 billion that flowed into these funds during their first year of trading. June\u2019s outflows also coincided with one of <span>bitcoin<\/span>\u2019s worst performances in 2026. As previously <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/bitcoin-sinks-20-in-june-as-traders-dump-longs-and-widen-2026-losses-to-34\/\">reported<\/a> by <span>Bitcoin.com<\/span> News, <span>bitcoin<\/span> shed approximately 20% in June, which in turn brought its year-to-date losses to more than 30%.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts attribute the surge in outflows to several factors, including Strategy\u2019s surprise sale of 32 <span>BTC<\/span> and a subsequent announcement that it is open to selling more in the future. There is also a consensus that the macroeconomic environment is a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/polymarket-bettors-set-54-odds-on-a-fed-rate-hike-this-year-after-warshs-debut\/\">primary reason<\/a> spot <span>bitcoin ETFs<\/span> have seen a surge in net outflows. Saeed Al-Marri, CEO of Ethra, agreed that the primary driver behind the ETF outflows has nothing to do with the <span>cryptocurrency<\/span> itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say it\u2019s mostly macro,\u201d Al-Marri told <span>Bitcoin.com<\/span> News. \u201cThe Fed held rates and killed the easing talk, and money is running from anything speculative. <span>Bitcoin<\/span> didn\u2019t do anything unusual in June. The macro did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These sentiments are shared by Tal Fromchenko, founder and CEO of LEVERAGED, who insisted that <span>bitcoin<\/span>\u2019s price movement is consistent with the past four-year cycles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ETF drop doesn\u2019t signal that <span>Bitcoin<\/span> is broken; really, it\u2019s just a natural reaction to high interest rates and the usual <span>crypto<\/span> market cycle,\u201d Fromchenko said. \u201c <span>Bitcoin<\/span> always moves in roughly four-year waves of booms and corrections. After hitting record highs last October, we are currently in the cooling-down phase of that cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Tech Boom Draws Capital Away<\/h2>\n<p>Fromchenko also contrasted the ETFs\u2019 sluggish performance with booming equities, particularly tech stocks. This dynamic, paired with the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates high, has forced large investors to play it safe, he said. The resulting selling pressure has locked <span>bitcoin<\/span> into a tight range near $60,000 over the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, while retail investors rush for the exit, a few high-conviction institutional players are buying the dip. Among them is the United Arab Emirates-based Goldman Lampe Private Bank, which recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/news\/article\/mergers-and-acquisitions\/202606300641PRIMZONEFULLFEED9754656\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> bought<\/a> $137 million of bitcoins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the crowd and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-are-bitcoin-whales\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whales<\/a> disagree this hard, I\u2019d bet on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-are-bitcoin-whales\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">whales<\/a>,\u201d Al-Marri said.<\/p>\n<p>In the near term, Al-Marri expects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/price\/bitcoin\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bitcoin<\/a> to trade sideways in the low-to-mid-$60,000 range while the outflows burn off. However, should the Federal Reserve issue a dovish statement, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/a-quick-introduction-to-crypto\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cryptocurrency<\/a> could potentially retest the $70,000 range.
