He noted that \u2018Lean Ethereum\u2019 is the third major iteration of the network, following the original proof-of-work chain and the 2022 Merge to proof-of- <span>stake<\/span>, and said almost every major piece of the protocol will be replaced during the phased rollout. Buterin added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPrivacy is no longer an afterthought; it is a first-class goal. Direct transaction re-execution, the way <span>nodes<\/span> currently verify the chain, would give way to recursive verification built on scalable transparent arguments of knowledge (STARKs), a form of cryptographic proof that lets computers check computations without redoing them. The consensus mechanism would be reworked toward one- or two-round finality, and <span>gas<\/span> pricing would become multidimensional, charging separately for different kinds of network resources.<\/p>\n<p>Buterin also floated moving the execution environment beyond the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-is-evm\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ethereum Virtual Machine<\/a> ( <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-is-evm\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EVM<\/a>) to alternatives such as RISC-V or a purpose-built leanISA, alongside a migration to new state architectures. By 2030, he envisions the network holding roughly 2 terabytes of dynamic state plus around 100 terabytes in a newer, more scalable design, with migration to the new structures optional but financially incentivized.<\/p>\n<h2>Quantum Resistance and Built-In Privacy<\/h2>\n<p>Quantum resistance has moved sharply up the priority list. Buterin noted that work on quantum-safe blob designs has already run for several months, and the roadmap targets every quantum-vulnerable component for eventual replacement.
