Bitcoin price volatility has also raised questions about whether current federal asset rules allow either department to retain the holdings indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Trump signed the executive order on March 6, 2025. It directed Treasury to establish offices for the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and US Digital Asset Stockpile. Bitcoin forfeited through criminal or civil cases would fund the reserve, while Treasury and Commerce could develop budget-neutral plans for further purchases.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has not confirmed a final structure.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson Liz Huston said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPresident Trump campaigned on a vision of cementing America as the global capital of cryptocurrency and other cutting-edge technologies. To deliver on the president\u2019s vision, the Trump administration continues to evaluate the best structure for a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department said its Office of Legal Counsel <em>\u201cis working closely with both the Treasury and Commerce departments to determine legally available options to accomplish the president\u2019s policy of establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Under the original order, the government would retain reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/cryptocurrencies\/section\/what-is-a-bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> rather than sell it.
