Instead of expanding <span>bitcoin<\/span> reserves through debt and equity issuance, the company is repositioning holdings as collateral for financial products, Standard Chartered\u2019s global head of digital assets research, Geoffrey Kendrick, explained on July 10.<\/p>\n<p>The shift centers on Strategy Inc.\u2019s STRC preferred stock, a credit product backed by <span>bitcoin<\/span> holdings. With MSTR\u2019s market value roughly matching its <span>bitcoin<\/span> holdings, meaning its mNAV is close to 1.0, the company has less ability to issue equity at a premium to fund additional purchases. This has led investors to question whether it might need to sell <span>BTC<\/span>, contributing to recent price weakness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe communication switch is tricky and has caused pain for <span>bitcoin<\/span> prices,\u201d he said, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOnce we all understand what Saylor is trying to do the pain will go away. And when that happens <span>bitcoin<\/span> at USD64K is a screaming buy (targeting USD100K end year) which also means MSTR at USD94 is too, as its mNAV is currently right around 1.0.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kendrick argues markets are reacting to uncertainty around Saylor\u2019s strategy. Kendrick said the company needs to show it can sell <span>bitcoin<\/span> if required, but believes proving that ability could reduce the need to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo convince investors the <span>bitcoin<\/span> is collateral Saylor needs to convince us he can sell <span>bitcoin<\/span> if needed (as he has done recently),\u201d he noted. \u201cHowever, once investors understand this is the new purpose of the <span>bitcoin<\/span>, MSTR won\u2019t need to sell anymore because the communication switch will have gained credibility (this is akin to when central banks say they will \u2018do whatever it takes\u2019 and so via credibility they end up needing to do nothing).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The analysis suggests confidence in the collateral structure could reduce pressure on Strategy Inc. to sell <span>bitcoin<\/span>. STRC has around $10 billion in notional value outstanding, and Kendrick argues <span>bitcoin<\/span> backing makes the preferred stock heavily over-collateralized. Stronger confidence could help STRC return toward $100 from around $90.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think this signalling will ultimately be effective, limiting the need for future MSTR sales of <span>BTC<\/span>,\u201d he said, arguing that recent MSTR concerns represent a short-term market reaction rather than a signal of a major <span>bitcoin<\/span> trend change. He further wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As such, we see this as mostly noise rather than a signal of <span>BTC<\/span>\u2019s medium-term direction. We therefore maintain our end-2026 forecast of USD- <span>BTC<\/span> 100,000 for <span>bitcoin<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Markets Wait for Proof That the New Model Can Work<\/h2>\n<p>Strategy Inc.\u2019s next phase depends on whether investors accept its new financial structure. MSTR\u2019s earlier valuation was tied to <span>bitcoin<\/span> accumulation, while the current model uses holdings to support credit products.<\/p>\n<p>Kendrick believes clearer communication about <span>bitcoin<\/span>\u2019s role can restore confidence.
