Internet service providers now have 15 days to block access to the platform. The ministry, which maintains the list, already has several thousand websites on it.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech rationale echoes the position regulators across Europe have taken: that whatever <span>prediction markets<\/span> call themselves, they function as gambling. The ministry considers <a href=\"https:\/\/srt.bitcoin.com\/polymarket-newsart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Polymarket<\/a> insufficiently supervised and therefore a risk. Jan \u0158ehola, director of the Institute for Gambling Regulation \u2013 which welcomed the ministry\u2019s decision \u2013 argued the distinction is fundamental.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith legal gambling, the state knows who runs the game, who takes part, which bets are suspicious, and what mechanisms are meant to protect players and market integrity,\u201d he said. \u201c <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-are-prediction-markets\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prediction markets<\/a>, by contrast, open up betting on practically any event \u2013 from the weather to political decisions to security operations \u2013 but without comparable oversight. That is not innovation without risk. It is a gambling product outside the rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u0158ehola also pointed to a risk specific to the format: because contracts settle on real-world outcomes, they create an incentive to influence those events or to trade on non-public information \u2013 the prediction-market equivalent of insider trading. That concern has shadowed Polymarket elsewhere, following episodes in which traders profited from contracts on geopolitical and security events.<\/p>\n<p>The platform\u2019s structure is central to why it keeps colliding with national gambling law. Polymarket operates as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-is-a-dex\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decentralized exchange<\/a> settling in the USDC <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bitcoin.com\/get-started\/what-are-stablecoins\/\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stablecoin<\/a> rather than through a licensed local operator, which places it outside the frameworks European regulators use to authorize and supervise betting.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute noted that a wide range of EU countries restricted or blocked the platform in recent months \u2013 and the pressure has intensified this month, with Italy re-adding Polymarket to its blocked list and the Netherlands rejecting the platform\u2019s appeal. The EU\u2019s markets watchdog, ESMA, separately warned this month that event contracts meeting the definition of financial instruments are <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/esma-says-eu-retail-ban-covers-many-prediction-markets-with-mica-awaiting-the-tokenized-ones\/\">already barred from retail sale<\/a> under existing binary-options rules.<\/p>\n<p>Against that tide, a handful of jurisdictions are moving the other way. Gibraltar this week <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/gibraltar-launches-the-worlds-first-dedicated-prediction-market-regulatory-regime\/\">launched a bespoke regulatory framework for prediction markets<\/a> \u2013 the first of its kind anywhere \u2013 carving the sector out of its general gambling law and licensing operators to serve the market rather than banning them.<\/p>\n<p>Malta has said it is exploring a similar regime.
