Nonetheless, over $11 billion in exports would be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Jamieson Greer stressed that these actions were <strong>\u201cnecessary to address these unfair trade practices to ensure American workers and companies can compete on a level playing field.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/us-targets-brazils-pix-trade-report-claims-instant-payment-system-restricts-american-commerce\/\">investigation<\/a> that led to this move, the USTR stressed that Pix, an instant payment service used by nearly 180 million Brazilians, exerted a burden and disadvantaged operators such as Visa and Mastercard due to its extension and fee-free nature.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva has rejected these statements, stressing that there was no justification for these unilateral measures against Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe have demonstrated that the allegations against Pix and the regulation of digital platforms are unfounded, and the accusations regarding deforestation are absurd,\u201d<\/strong> Lula <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LulaOficial\/status\/2077598341316161544?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>, calling Pix <strong>\u201ca heritage of our people and an international reference for public digital infrastructure.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alisha Chhangani, an associate director at the Atlantic Council, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/americas\/trump-brazil-payment-system-pix-097bacaa?mod=world_lead_pos3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">referred<\/a> to these tariffs as the first time such measures have been taken against a sovereign payment system. <strong>\u201cThis is the first example and it won\u2019t be the last,\u201d<\/strong> she pointed out, as Washington seeks to protect the hegemony of the dollar in the payments arena.<\/p>\n<p>The duty will apply to products that are entered for consumption or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption on or after 12:01 ET on
