According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-cdca\/pr\/ex-la-county-sheriffs-deputy-sentenced-one-year-prison-submitting-false-affidavit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Justice Department\u2019s July 20 sentencing announcement<\/a>, Rodriguez falsely claimed a detective had asked LASD\u2019s Gang Surveillance Team to assist with a robbery investigation in Cudahy.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cRodriguez obtained a search warrant for the victim by lying in an affidavit to a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The affidavit falsely stated that Rodriguez had identified a robbery suspect who used two cellphones. He then claimed the victim\u2019s cellphone number belonged to that suspect and sought GPS precision location information, despite knowing the victim had no connection to the robbery.<\/p>\n<p>After serving the warrant on the phone provider, Rodriguez obtained location pings, tracked the victim to Utah, and shared the information with Eric Chase Saavedra, another former LASD deputy who owned a private security company.<\/p>\n<h2>Adam Iza Cases Extend From Deputy Scheme to Bitcoin Kidnapping<\/h2>\n<p>Rodriguez worked private security assignments for wealthy Los Angeles-area clients while serving as an active-duty deputy. One was Adam Iza, a self-described cryptocurrency businessman who lived in Beverly Hills and Newport Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Iza, identified in previous reporting as the CEO of crypto platform Zort, was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-platform-ceo-arrested-for-allegedly-paying-deputies-in-extortion-scheme\/\">arrested for allegedly paying sheriff\u2019s deputies in an extortion scheme<\/a>. He later pleaded guilty in California to conspiracy against rights, wire fraud and tax evasion.<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors also charged Iza in Connecticut, where he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/hundreds-of-millions-in-bitcoin-at-center-of-violent-kidnapping-plot\/\">bitcoin kidnapping plot<\/a> tied to the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars\u2019 worth of BTC. He remains in federal custody awaiting sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Saavedra\u2019s company regularly employed active deputies and other law enforcement officers.
