Bitcoin’s difficulty is a self-adjusting metric that keeps the average time between blocks near ten minutes, ensuring a consistent issuance schedule despite changes in total mining power.

With the latest adjustment, the network has now recorded nine difficulty reductions and six increases in 2026, spanning block heights 931392 through 959616. Across 28,224 blocks from Jan. 8 through July 25, the average adjustment came to 6.4 percentage points.

That’s a fairly large swing when you consider what the system is trying to do: make only the corrections needed to keep block production hovering around one every ten minutes, especially as mining power rises and falls.

Nine Cuts, Six Increases: A Year of Uneven Adjustments

The network has recorded a cumulative 31.04% in difficulty increases and 43.96% in cumulative decreases so far this year. Since January, Bitcoin’s mining difficulty has fallen from 146.47 trillion to 126.23 trillion, marking a 13.82% decline from where it began the year. But what’s driving the change?

The answer isn’t just one thing. A combination of factors has pushed difficulty lower, but bitcoin’s market performance has been the biggest driver. Since Jan. 1, bitcoin has lost 26%, and that decline has weighed heavily on miner economics.

Over the past 206 days, hashprice, the estimated daily value of one petahash per second (PH/s) of hashpower, has fallen from $37.39 to $32.21. Alongside this, many large-scale mining companies are finding stronger revenue opportunities by shifting their megawatts toward artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and cloud services.

Falling Bitcoin Price and the Shift Toward AI Push Difficulty Lower

That redirection is showing up across the industry. Large mining companies with existing power contracts and site infrastructure are finding it easier to lease that capacity to AI and cloud computing customers than to keep running it against thinner mining margins. The equipment doesn’t disappear. It just gets pointed at a different kind of workload.

For now, the difficulty algorithm keeps doing its job, trimming the target as hashpower drops off so block times stay near ten minutes. Whether the back half of the year brings more cuts or a return to increases will depend largely on where bitcoin’s price and miner economics head next.

Source link

(Originally posted on : Bitcoin News ) Key Takeaways Bitcoin’s difficulty fell 0.74% at block 959616, its 15th adjustment of 2026 so far.
