The case challenges a core Apple argument that central control over iPhone software provides greater user safety.

Good to Know

The real Sparrow Wallet offers desktop software and has no official iOS app.

James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis and Jalen Delgado report losses totalling about $1.84 million.

The plaintiffs seek repayment, additional damages, risk warnings and a jury trial.

Fake Sparrow App Leads to Major Bitcoin Losses

Three users say they trusted the App Store listing because Apple reviews software before allowing public downloads.

James Ramirez reports a loss near $875,000. Christopher Ellis places his loss at about $840,000, while Jalen Delgado says he lost roughly $120,000. Together, the claimed losses reach about $1.84 million.

Each plaintiff downloaded an iPhone app presented as Sparrow Wallet and transferred Bitcoin into it. The legitimate Sparrow product supports macOS, Windows and Linux, but no official mobile or iOS version exists.

The complaint says the fraudulent software took control of the funds rather than storing them for the users.

A filing submitted in the US District Court for the Northern District of California accuses Apple of negligence, false advertising and failure to provide adequate warnings. The allegations remain unproven, and Apple has not yet filed a public response to the claims described in the initial complaint.

Case Targets Apple App Store Safety Message

Apple has long used security as a reason to retain control over iPhone app distribution. Company materials describe App Store review as a process designed to find malicious, misleading and fraudulent software before publication.

The plaintiffs argue that such assurances caused them to rely on the fake listing.

The complaint states: “As part of a sustained marketing campaign, Apple has positioned itself, its products and services, as offering a level of security and trustworthiness superior to any competing technology company.”

According to the filing, Apple control left users dependent on company promises that approved apps were safe and reliable.

That argument may become central to the case. Apple will likely dispute any legal duty to cover losses caused by a third-party developer, while the plaintiffs will need to connect App Store approval and marketing directly to their decision to transfer Bitcoin.

Sparrow Developer Had Warned About Fake Apps

Sparrow Wallet creator Craig Raw had publicly warned about iOS apps using the Sparrow name before the lawsuit.

Raw submitted a placeholder app in 2025 that told iPhone users the real Sparrow Wallet was desktop-only and that mobile versions using the name were fraudulent. Apple later accused Raw of dishonest developer activity and threatened action against his account, according to his public account of the dispute.

The lawsuit cites those earlier warnings as evidence that Apple knew, or should have known, about Sparrow impersonation inside the App Store.

The plaintiffs want Apple to reimburse the lost Bitcoin value, pay other damages and add clearer disclosures about App Store review limits. They also requested a jury trial.

Source link

(Originally posted on : Crypto News – iGaming.org ) Apple faces a federal lawsuit from three Bitcoin users who say a fraudulent wallet passed App Store review and caused combined losses above $1.8 million.
