A broader rollout covering more clients, countries and currencies is planned for 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTokenized deposits will enable Wells Fargo\u2019s corporate and commercial clients to move money between accounts and across borders with greater ease and increased speed,\u201d Chief Financial Officer Mike Santomassimo said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.wf.com\/news-releases\/news-details\/2026\/Wells-Fargo-to-Launch-Tokenized-Deposits-for-Corporate-and-Commercial-Clients\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bank will integrate the service into its existing payments platform. Eligible transactions will automatically use tokenized deposits when they can improve speed, timing or flexibility.<\/p>\n<h2>Supporters See a Milestone for Onchain Banking<\/h2>\n<p>Wells Fargo said the system will support transfers at any hour, including weekends and holidays. It also plans to add programmable payments that release funds once predefined conditions are met.<\/p>\n<p>The deposits will remain bank liabilities and retain the regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility attached to Wells Fargo\u2019s conventional products.<\/p>\n<p>Magmar, co-CEO of Cosmos Labs, said Wells Fargo\u2019s blockchain is built using <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/0xMagmar\/status\/2085066020406886488?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cosmos technology<\/a>. He described the launch as a validation of the network\u2019s \u201cinteroperability, programmability, and reliability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vladimir Tikhomirov, co-founder of Algebra, said the dollar-pound launch showed blockchain moving into regulated foreign exchange and cross-border settlement. He said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this adoption curve continues, it\u2019s reasonable to expect that within the next few years tokenized real-world assets will become part of everyday financial activity.\u201d However, he warned that interoperability could become a major challenge if banks develop isolated networks that fragment liquidity.<\/p>\n<h2>Critics Question the Need for Private Ledgers<\/h2>\n<p>Omid Malekan, an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, offered a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/malekanoms\/status\/2084670261647802702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sharper critique<\/a>. He argued that banks already provide real-time internal payments using modern databases, without deploying permissioned blockchains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBanks don\u2019t need blockchain to do better banking, at all,\u201d Malekan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In his view, private networks remove the characteristics that make public blockchains useful, including open validation, censorship resistance and settlement guarantees.
