That connection gives Deribit\u2019s mostly professional trader base access to Coinbase\u2019s centralized order book, a meaningfully deeper pool of liquidity than the platform has managed on its own.<\/p>\n<p>It also sets up an expansion well beyond Deribit\u2019s historical focus (i.e. bitcoin and ether derivatives), with the new integration expected to eventually bring hundreds of additional assets onto the platform. Customer funds can stay parked in Deribit\u2019s own ecosystem even as they serve as collateral for derivatives trading.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase co-founder and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/brian_armstrong\/status\/2089110074530640056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CEO Brian Armstrong called it<\/a> \u201ca significant moment for Deribit and Coinbase,\u201d adding that the approval is evidence that \u201cthe UAE is really embracing modern finance and digital assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_840013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-840013\" style=\"width:1474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-840013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image source: X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is Deribit\u2019s second regulatory approval from VARA in under two years. The exchange became the first crypto derivatives platform to win VARA\u2019s blessing when it set up its global headquarters in Dubai at the start of 2025, and it had already been offering spot trading under a separate VARA Exchange Services licence since January of that year.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin.com News covered Coinbase\u2019s original <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/crypto-consolidation-coinbase-to-acquire-deribit-for-2-9b\/\">agreement to acquire Deribit for roughly $2.9 billion<\/a>, a deal structured as approximately $700 million in cash plus 11 million shares of Coinbase\u2019s Class A common stock, and later reported when Coinbase <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/coinbase-finalizes-deribit-acquisition-to-lead-global-crypto-derivatives-market\/\">finalized the acquisition in August 2025<\/a> to become the undisputed leader in global crypto derivatives.<\/p>\n<p>At the time the deal closed, Deribit had posted $185 billion in monthly trading volume and carried roughly $60 billion in open interest, numbers that made it the clear prize in a derivatives market Coinbase had been trying to break into for years.<\/p>\n<h2>A Bigger Bet on the UAE<\/h2>\n<p>The VARA approval comes at a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/kraken-secures-vara-approval-to-launch-crypto-trading-and-staking-in-uae\/\">several other exchanges<\/a> too are treating Dubai as a proving ground for regulated crypto derivatives and spot trading, well ahead of similarly comprehensive frameworks in the U.S. or Europe.<\/p>\n<p>For Coinbase, plugging Deribit\u2019s liquidity directly into its own order book is also a step toward the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/coinbases-everything-exchange-expands-with-pre-ipo-perps-stock-options-tokenized-stocks\/\">everything exchange<\/a>\u201d model the company has been building since the acquisition closed, layering spot, futures, options, and now, deeper offshore liquidity access, under one roof.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the integration doesn\u2019t change how Deribit\u2019s U.S.-facing business operates, since the VARA license is specific to Dubai-regulated activity.
