Base led with 7.3 million transfers, while Polygon processed 5.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>USDC was used for virtually all of those transactions, accounting for roughly 14 million transfers. An agent might independently purchase computing power, data, or access to an application programming interface whenever it needs the service.<\/p>\n<p>X402 is designed for that environment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinbase.com\/developer-platform\/discover\/launches\/x402\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Developed by Coinbase<\/a>, the open standard uses the web\u2019s HTTP 402 \u201cPayment Required\u201d mechanism to let software request and complete payments automatically. Coinbase has expanded its facilitator across Base, Solana and Polygon, with USDC supported as a settlement asset.<\/p>\n<p>The activity does not mean 14 million individual AI agents are making purchases. One agent can initiate many transfers. Still, the frequency offers an early look at a payments market that did not exist at meaningful scale only recently.<\/p>\n<p>For Circle, the issuer of USDC, that could expand stablecoin demand beyond human trading, remittances, and corporate settlement.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase\u2019s \u2018High-Conviction\u2019 Bet Starts Taking Shape<\/h2>\n<p>The growth follows Coinbase\u2019s July rollout allowing businesses to accept USDC payments directly from <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/coinbase-rolls-out-ai-agents-payment-for-businesses-in-usdc-calls-it-a-high-conviction-bet\/\">AI agents through Coinbase Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase described agentic payments as one of its \u201chigh-conviction bets.\u201d Businesses can receive, reconcile, and cash out agent payments through the same account used for other Coinbase services.<\/p>\n<p>That rollout connected the merchant side of the market with Coinbase\u2019s wider agent infrastructure, including x402 and its Base network. The emerging pattern is notable.
